Going to be refurbishing our cottage in a few months, the only room not being done is our bedroom.

Therefore the whole house will literally be a building site for a month or two and no furniture can be left.

I don’t really want to load it all in a van and ship it off to self storage, unload it and repeat in 6 weeks.

Any ideas what i could hire/buy to store it all in on my land while it’s being done?

I was thinking a small shipping container, but A) that seems a little overkill and B) you can’t seem to just "hire" them for reasonable money (when delivery and collection are considered.

The best idea I can come up with at the moment is hiring a large Luton van and leaving it there, but 6 weeks of hiring a Luton van seems a waste.

A Decent branded pop up gazebo with side panels is another idea, but is that going to be watertight enough for a sofa and wooden furniture etc.

Any ideas?

Probably worth speaking to a local removals firm, rather than self-storage. They rock up with Van, vanish, offloading into their warehouse, then magically reappear when needed. May or may not cost less than self-storage, but will be dry and securish.

Containers are hugely prone to condensation, and a gazebo will just leak and then blow away. Unless you like furry furniture, make sure wherever it is going is nice and dry.

Machine mart do some temporary garages which are much stronger than a gazebo, although not the cheapest things

Gazebos are rubbish with any sort of wind and not at all waterproof in my experience.

We had a half size shipping container (20 foot I think) for most of last year while doing our extension. It was 15 quid a week to have it, plus 200 each for delivery and collection. It stayed dry inside, no issues with condensation, and didn't leak; but clearly it had been well used so was pretty dirty. We were using it for garage / garden / workshop stuff so no problem but you'd want to make sure it'd be clean enough inside for your house contents. The delivery costs are clearly significant for a shorter period but I reckon it's probably the best way to keep your stuff dry, secure (ish) and accessible.

Hire a small marquee? Should be cheaper as its winter.

Ok so there doesn’t seem to be any products that I hadn’t considered already, bugger!

Reluctant to call in a removals company as access is really tight, and we only have 1 sofa, 1 chair, 1 sideboard, 1 dresser, a table and chairs, not even enough to fill the back of a tranny.

I’ll ask for some quotes for 10ft containers to be hired

Otherwise I think a decent quality gazebo (gala) secured down very well is my only option, we don’t get much wind and it will be April/May so not too cold/wet

Tell you what, try picking up the phone. Less stuff is less storage charges, and if you are flexible about timings, they'll probably send a small van or the bosses Volvo smile

If it's that little stuff buy a secondhand Carcoon on eBay. Get one of the outdoor ones. They are weatherproof and connected to the mains have fans that push air through so your stuff won't get must and mouldy. You will be able to sell if for about the same as you paid for itM

Build a nice garage first.
