We have a leaking boiler, it is leaking from the inspection cover on the burner sump, the plumber who serviced the boiler has come back twice to try and stop the leak and replaced the cover FOC. It did not leak before they serviced it and they had to remove he cover in the service.

It now appears that the burner sump needs replacing to rectify the issue at a cost of £260! I do feel that this should be covered by the plumber or ideal as according to the plumber Ideal have modified the burner sump to rectify the problem, but i spoke with ideal today and they claim there is no fault.

I am a bit stuck with what to do, i am going to attempt to seal it with some PTFE tape and im not paying £260! But i have been told by the plumber that i am not allowed to touch the boiler.

Didn't Ideal offer an engineer to attend in return for money?

I've seen this fault a few times. Logics appear robust so far but I can recount 3 occasions where I have been called out to a sump leaking. There's usually a hairline crack behind the inspection cover. The sump is exposed to flue gases & although these aren't particularly hot (<70c) there's something not quite right with the design of the sump.

Unfortunately Ideal have form in blatantly denying any faults or problems occur with their appliances. The Isar/Icos PCB debacle for instance.

Andy, what boilers do you recommend a person avoids at all costs??

I think "buy cheap, buy twice" probably stands. I don't install boilers, I service & repair them so I'm not 100% sure what the manufacturers are currently churning out. I usually turn up a few years down the line when things start to go wrong.

It's probably easier to say which boilers I'd recommend. Worcester Bosch or Vaillant.

Hairline crack on the sump, not the plumbers fault.
If they removed, it would suggest they did a proper service and not just stuck the analyser in.
Who quotes the £260?

Gas fired sieves.

Worcester Bosch don't make the best boilers anymore, but they have the best customer services by far, in and out of warranty.

ATAG are trying to get in on the domestic scene, I've been on a demonstration in one of their vans. Really well engineered, simple and well layed out, too new to gauge what their customer services are like though. They get great reviews on Trust Pilot though.

OP, cracking sumps on the Logic range are common and no fault of anyone (well, except Ideal). Your plumber is correct, you can't legally touch it.

£260 seems a bit steep, I've not done the job myself, but I've been told it takes less than an hour. Despite its flaws, the Logic is a well designed boiler which is very easy to work on.

We have an Ideal Logic+ installed in 2013. In 2015 it had a leak. Our plumber came out and diagnosed a crack in the black condensate pipe on the bottom of the boiler before it exits the casing and told us to phone Ideal. Couple of days later an Ideal engineer came out and fixed it under warranty.

Update....I rang ideal and they denied that the sump has been updated in any way, so our plumber who spoke to an ideal engineer is either telling a porkey or ideal are. I believe the plumber.

On last inspection the puddle was small so i nipped up the screws a bit and will have a look in few days to see if it is still leaking.

We did email our plumber and state that there was no leak prior to the service, so is he responsible...yes and he stated that a member of his staff would have removed the inpection cover but whether he did or not s a different matter.

The plumber quoted £260 all in plus vat to replace the sump as 'it's a big job' personally i think he is covering the last 2 visits FOC to replace new inspection cover, and a kinked pipe but with no success ( an admission in itself)

The inspection cover is a weird design and there is a rubber seal in a recess and then the cover pushes against an edge on the sump so if the seal is uneven you can only tighten the cover a certain amount before it is against the edge on the sump.

The plumber is not responsible IMO.

It's a well known fault and will most likely be cracked on the top right hand side of the opening when you remove the inspection cover.

We moved into a new build TW house in 2013 with one of these boilers in the garage.

Earlier this year it started leaking, and as we have a Homecare policy with British Gas it was fixed under that. They replaced the black condensate pipe as it too had a hairline crack.

Water would pool on the front lip of the unit and drip down.
