We're currently investigating purchasing a camping trailer. Bloody hell they're not cheap for a decent one with a locking ABS lid!!

We do a fair bit of camping in the UK over the summer and we're contemplating a one or two week trip to France at the end of August and a trailer would make life much much easier as we do take an awful lot of kit. However, I'm worried about leaving the trailer anywhere and am contemplating doing the trip in a single journey, which would be a fair bit of driving.

Do any of the hitch locks, wheel clamps etc etc actually work or am I right to be worried leaving a trailer in a motel car park full of a few thousand pounds worth of camping kit?

I'm happy immobilising the trailer once there, it's just the journey I'm worried about.

We've left a few hundreds worth of bikes on the rack on the back of the car before (b and b type place). I backed it right into some bushes so it wasn't easily seen and of course the bikes had multiple locks on them.
Many overnight hotel chains in France have security gates which are closed overnight and are often out of town near shopping centres, so other than locking it to the car and maybe adding a wheel clamp there is not a lot else you can do is there ?

You can always remove the jockey wheel once you've got it hooked up and keep it in the car.
