In my cellar I have a large air raid shelter .It has two sections and has solid brick walls with a
12 inch concrete roof .Has anyone demolished one ?
Legend has it the house was once owned by the local ARP warden and the shelter was built to
his specifications.
I have a feeling it might have to be tackled roof first but as it is below my lounge the idea of taking up floorboards and carpets etc is not pleasant.
Advice welcome.

Why destroy it? Sounds like making work for yourself.

When I am in it the ceiling is quite low and as it is split in two with a thick dividing
wall the the rooms are small .
If and when it is demolished an approximate 16 x 17 area would be freed up .

It is a good piece of history and may become a good selling point for the house in the future. Preserve it if poss.

It may come in handy when Trump starts firing missiles at N. Korea. You never know.....

We have one in our back garden. about 2m square with a 8" thick concrete roof. The door is behind a blast wall. We have a bush which pretty much surrounds it so you wouldn't know it was there without really looking. At the moment it is nothing but spider storage, but I keep trying to think up something. As I'm about half way between a city, international airport and nuclear weapons overnight rest stop I wouldn't fancy it's chances against a 1MT groundburst so its usefulness as a bomb shelter is limited these days.

Only if he fires them on a reciprocal bearing!

I think he should send in Tony Blair to deal with it, as he has track record of this thing and no reputation to lose...

We've got a number of properties with air raid shelters beneath them. I think during WW11 the cellar under every so many houses on a street was converted to one.

What do you hope to gain by demolishing it?
