I know there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari and there is certainly no such thing as a cheap 456. I'm going to Brightwells Auction tomorrow and they have a LHD 456M GTA up for grabs. It looks very tired and has a patchy history to say the least. The estimate is £30-35k. I think it might struggle to make that. Will be interested to see it and what its like in the flesh and very interested to see if/what it sells for.

Does anyone know the car or history behind it?

Grigio Ingrid? Not heard of that one before. That interior looks tired, but there's a car in there somewhere. The front and rear bumpers and boot lid will all adjust with a bit of time and patience. The lack of history will bite you in the arse come selling time. It'd be nice at 25k.

The back seats don't look right. Are the rear headrests missing?

So no history to speak of. Not UK-registered or MOTed. Ex-Japan and Middle East - so no chance of digging up any service records or anything either, assuming it has been serviced whilst in those parts of the world anyway. Quite a high mileage (I know, I know...). Visually scruffy even after some sort of refurb. Bits missing (who steels an air vent?). An interesting(!) colour combination and it's an automatic not a manual. Someone needs to point out the good bits because I can't see any reason whatsoever to be bidding on this particular car.

I'd be tempted to have a punt at £15-20k!!

This is a car for someone who can easily strip down & rebuild an engine that they have never seen before, and who knows people or is able to do bodywork! Otherwise you might as well buy a good one.

"UK registration should be no more than a formality..." Beware - when i came to register mine with DVLA they were very strict in their requirements for original CoC and Italian registration documents. There seemed to be little leeway.

Also, you're going to have to really like that colour as it won't sell well.

Still an underrated and undervalued model IMHO.

Went this morning. The car was even worse than I expected in the flesh. Will be fascinated to see what/if it sells. Brave purchase!

Didn't a dodgy green one go for under £20k a couple years back & the buyer came on here to comment
£28k wouldn't work for me on a car like this you could spend half that again in the 1st year
I'd take a DB9 at that sort of pricepoint

Dodgy green one ?? Lol, I presume you are referring to my P&J sir. 🤓

I did indeed buy it for under £20k, and yes it was very poorly advertised, but had been and still is very well maintained mechanically. It had originally been owned by the guy who owns the Millenium Copthorne group of hotels in 1995 for over £150k so depreciation was immense.

Since buying it I have done quite a bit to tidy it up inside and out, and now it is very presentable but certainly no concours queen.

I have done 7k in it and had no real issues - some minor niggles as per the thread below - but it has been very reliable and taken me in extreme comfort to Le Mans and Nurburgring twice each.

After 5 years though I think it is time to move on and having just bought my dream car... R35 GT-R - I can see the 456 staying idle for months at a time, so it is interesting to see the price a scruffy LHD and automatic one now makes. Mine is RHD and with the more desirable manual box. Maybe for once I won't lose money on a car 😬

Ha that's the one, sorry! I thought it had a very patchy service history from memory, from the previous owner from the very dodgy hotel chain!!

Assuming it's the same one it's now on eBay having managed a few miles before the gearbox blew up...

It's not the same one, unless someone managed 20k miles in a few weeks. Also the interior is different

Fair enough, I didn't investigate. Didn't think 2 cheap lhd 456s would have come to auction so recently.

I was thinking this the other day, a nice manual example can be had for around £60k. Seems like a bargain for a V12 manual Ferrari.
