Hi, I have a gravel drive with a brick path running across it. I want to move one end of the path. Under the drive is hardcore sufficiently compacted that it is very hard to break up, even with a pickaxe. Having researched it, it would seem I need to remove the gravel to expose the hardcore then put down some kind of mortar, lay the bricks on it then mortar between the bricks. Am i right? What should I use? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. No, I'm not sure. The rest of the drive is definitely on hardcore and the bricks haven't moved with 30 years of being driven over. Also there is nothing visable holding the bricks from moving sideways. I'm reluctant to take-up the path and investigate until I have a plan fro replacing.

Thanks for the steer. They are on sand! I still don't see how the ones on the edge don't become loose over time. Or are they on some kind of mortar?

Yes, they will be. How deep is the hardcore? Can you get 50mm thickness of sand on top and then the blocks? Only the outside 200mm needs to be set in concrete.

Thanks for reply.
Yes, there is room for 50mm of sand. I would guess from having had to dig through it that there is about 200mm hard core.
