I am using the usual online comparison sites to get prices, and am getting between 3 and 5 results, all from companies I have never heard of with poor online ratings. Hundreds of well known companies are listed as "unable to provide a quote at this time".

Normal?

Dunno, but I just got a renewal through from eSure at £341. After a quick comparison search, I got a like for like quote (in fact a bit better) from Legal and General for £158.

My renewal, which is more expensive than last ear, is so far my cheapest option.

What is causing companies to not quote on line?

If you or your property is not fitting within their profile, you wont get an on-line quote. Try getting figures from someone you have a conversation with, like a company that deals direct, or a broker.

I've gone with NFU Mutual again.

My buidlings and contents insurance was due for renewal recently, I spent a long time comparing prices from pretty much the entire market. I found the pricing from Halifax, Lloyds and More Than the most reasonable.

Well after all that I went onto Go Compare, who literally had untold quotes, all super cheap, from well recognised companies. I have ended up getting B and C for 100 a year through LV - so a saving of 170 quid for the year. Crazy
