Need to get a new car next month as current Audi A6 Lease is coming to an end.
I have a 1700kg Caravan and live down a track. 4x4 is required.
Think I am looking at a Range Rover L322 or a VW Touareg.
£7k budget.
What is the best engine in each of these and which one would you go for.
I know the Touareg has the same engine as my Audi. 3.0l TDI which is good but the Range Rover looks better and easier to find a good one by the looks of it .

Have had a 4.2 v8 petrol Touareg and have just bought a Range Rover L322 3.6 TDV8
the VW is cheaper, slightly better built and sportier (on Air & adaptive dampers)
the RR is classier, roomier and more stately
I'd say go RR unless you can find a VW with Airsuspension that is suitably cheaper / younger as the RR will depreciate less

Kind of my thinking I had a L322 4.4 V8 very thirsty but was a second car.
Finding a good VW seems to be very hard and yes I am interested in getting one with air suspension which makes it harder still.
Would this one fit the bill?Finding a good VW seems to be very hard and yes I am interested in getting one with air suspension which makes it harder still.

The V10 Tdi Tuareg is very good while it lasts, but having a LOT of torque, it does eats various transmission parts like candy.
And these parts are quite expensive ( company where I used to work had one of these, and spent about 8K pounds trying to solve all the problems, in the end sold the car without successfully repairing it ).
If Tuareg, then 3.0 Tdi...

I have looked at them but they don't seem to have aged soo well. I like the Discovery4 but they are out of my price range.
Also the caravan club state 85% rule where the caravan shouldn't weigh more then 85% of the cars kerbweight. I can understand the logic but how can that be the same for pickups that weigh around 2.5tonne the have towing limits of 3.5 tonne?

That's only a guide for people new to towing, there's nothing wrong with towing to the limit of the vehicle as long as you have B&E category on your driving licence and have a good bit of experience. Also the caravan club state 85% rule where the caravan shouldn't weigh more then 85% of the cars kerbweight. We're looking at Discovery 4's to replace our A6 Avant (3.0 TDI Quattro), but will have to wait until we've finished building the house!
Thinking of a Range Rover 3.6Tdi from 07-08. Seem good for the money.
I have a B+E and have towed all over Europe in the last year. Nice to know that it’s a guideline as might buy a cheap £1.5k 4x4 now as a temporary car that just about weighs the same as the caravan and spend more in the spring when the business picks up.

I'd avoid LRs to be honest. Yes, they are excellent tow vehicles, but its not much use if it won't start because a load of water has leaked into the electrics (common on L322s). Gearboxes are fragile too and you need to budget £2k to get them fixed.
Discovery 3 is an amazing bit of kit (I own one), but you are always worrying about what bit will go wrong next.
I would go for the VW or something like an XC90. The later doesn't have much 4x4 trickery, but should be fine. Late model Shigun would also get my vote.

The funny thing is all i am seeing is VW's with broken suspension, or faults showing on the dash, all the XC90's I have looked at have broken rear diffs, meaning they are front wheel drive only. Guess what £2k for the XC90 repair, £4k-£8k to fix the VW suspension. Range Rover seems like still a good idea.

To be fair, I always worry about what part will go wrong next on my A6 anyway! Clutch is on the way, but I'm nursing it along Discovery 3 is an amazing bit of kit (I own one), but you are always worrying about what bit will go wrong next.

Big and expensive second hand cars - if they're out of warranty it's a worry. Regardless of age!
Try looking at a Jeep Grand Cherokee I have now had two the first a 2011 ran it up to 100,000 miles needed two bulbs in that mileage now changed to a 2015 Overland model ,The 2011 towed lovely pulling a tri axle car trailer across Europe and my large twin axle caravan around Scotland,I have only just had the tow bar fitted to 2015 model so have not tow yet ,but I can't see a problem with it.
Nice car to drive I think the newer one looks better without the chrome grill.I am a Land Rover fan and still have a 90 but these as very day cars take some beating .

Leginigel, your tax expired 24 Nov.
Bro's had 3 brand new Disco's and the last one needed two new gearboxes, done under warranty but £4k each.
I've got a 12 reg diesel Sportage with 85k miles on it, so far I've had to change the brake pads and that's it. Oh apart from an oil change every year(ish) that I do myself. 7 year 100k miles warranty, gives c 35mpg, what's not to like? Got a grumbling front l/h wheel bearing dealer says drop it in when I've got the time and they'll do it f.o.c.
