I Owe HMRC £22k Stamp Duty
Discussion
Have come home this evening to a letter from HMRC telling me I owe them just shy of £22k, allegedly “an additional payment of £21559 is due.”
We moved House about 6 weeks ago and definitely sent the stamp duty due (£21550) to our solicitors. As a friend is a partner at the firm I’d be surprised if they withheld the money for any reason.
The only other thing I can think is that the property has 2 titles on it, both leasehold and freehold as the previous owners bought the freehold, so whether it has flagged on their system as 2 purchases I’m not sure?
Anyone care to share any wisdom??

You do realise that is more than the amount of corporation tax Cadbury paid on its profits last year, and the year before and before and before, etc..

Yes, had it confirmed at the time. And if we hadn’t, the deposit wouldn’t have been paid so we wouldn’t have completed.55palfers said:

We had exactly the same letter when we last moved, except we had been fined as well. It turned out that our solicitors had "forgotten" to make the stamp duty payment to HMRC. They paid up and sent a grovelling letter. I had had enough of solicitors at that point and couldn't be bothered to make more of a fuss..We moved House about 6 weeks ago and definitely sent the stamp duty due (£21550) to our solicitors. We've had exactly the same letter (albeit for a significantly lower amount... ).
We completed on 18th Sept, first letter from HMRC was 24th Oct, and now had another (with more interest added) on 7th Nov.
Solicitors say that money has been sent, but not received. I suspect either backlog / system errors at HMRC, or greedy solicitors wanting to earn interest off our cash.....
