Hi All,

So I've fired up our brand new multi fuel burner with wood and notice the glass has almost gone completely black?!?!?

It has been on for approx 3 hours the house is nice and cosy without the central heating.

I have been using off cuts of soft wood which we have loads of as we have just had the house completely renovated....could this be causing the black glass??

Is it easy to clean the glass?? What do I use.

Help much appreciated.

Iceboy.

Just let more air in to the stove, and the glass will clean right off.

Implies either you're running it too cold or damp wood - or not having the vents properly set. you want air from the top and the bottom vents closed.

Whats the stove?

to clean just spit on some newspaper, dab in the ash, then rub the glass.

On the first occasion we used ours (Heta 45) recently the inside went black, and since it has self cleaned. I wasn't paying attention, but we were told by the installer that it needed a run in, which I think Sarah did.

RE cleaning, don't buy anything, use the ash which the burner creates with some kitchen roll, seriously.
Edit, as per the above who beat me to it.

It is a Bohemia x-something cube.

Hopefully the picture works as I only have my phone.

Great stove seems very controllable I have it down to a low setting which seems to keep the wood going longer once the unit is hot.

I will try the newspaper and ash trick tomorrow morning....and try turning it up to see if that works.

Soot is carbon (C). C means incomplete combustion; if you add more oxygen (O) it will burn to CO2.

It's a natural by-product of using a very low setting and will partially burn off if/when you crank it up.

That'll do it (blacken the glass)
It will (clear the glass)
Respectively smile
Also more air wash and less through draught (if your stove has separate settings) can help.

Agree with others' cleaning suggestions.
You also say you use soft wood. Can be more resinous than hard, especially if not well seasoned. Resin = tar.

If your stove only needs to tick over on a low setting to keep your place warm you'll always get deposits.
My only stove-fitted house did this. Turned it up occasionally just to clean.

Nice aren't they smile

You can get special sponges that clean the ash off the glass much more effectively than newspaper, they work like some kind of voodoo magic.

I use vitcas glass cleaner. It eats through the crap on the glass, no scrubbing. The newspaper ash is ok but i picked up a lump of charcoal and scratched the glass so dont do that any more. The wire pads/sponges ok but its still effort. The spray you spray on and wipe off, pretty amazing how it eats through the tar layer on the glass. Glass is sparkeling in seconds. Spray will last 2 or 3 seasons.

Id also say towards the very end of the evenings burn open the airwash up. You can get a browning at the end of a burn as airflow slows.
