I have a Tempur mattress which - in my opinion - is fabulously comfortable and is the only kind of mattress I'll ever own..
My girlfriend is somewhat less convinced and believes it's sufficiently uncomfortable that it qualifies as an instrument of torture. Apparently it's just not soft enough and she refuses to sleep on it, which means that I always have to spend evenings and weekends at her house.

She's suggested a mattress topper to allow her to be comfortable if we spend some evenings here. There seems to be a vast selection available at varying prices - does anybody use one and have a recommendation? I believe the main requirement is to provide a softer sleeping surface - it can't be feather though or it will make me sneeze.

My ex used to have one. The only difference I really noticed was it would make me sweat profusely in my sleep!

I have tried a couple, first one was memory foam and too warm for me so lasted less than a week. The second and current one is microfibre and is fine, think it came from soak and sleep online.

We like a firm mattress but can find they can leave you with numbness so have used a topper for several years. First off had an Ikea one then another one that's much like a thin duvet. We recently changed our mattress and got one which is supremely comfortable but we didn't realise it has foam in the top layer so we sweat like buggery even in the depths of winter and still using a 4-tog duvet. We've put the topper back on to help create a thermal barrier to some success. How people get on with memory foam mattresses I've no idea. I'm slightly dreading the summer but don't want to swap the new one for something less comfortable under the 100-day clause as I have a neck injury and therefore pretty sensitive to these things.

We have one from John Lewis, my wife rates it very highly. Definitely softens the mattress but can get a bit warm in summer.

My oh prefersa firmer matress to me so when buying one when we moved in together we obviously went with her choice. I already owned a memory foam topper which i then tried but she didn’t like it. After a couple of months i chucked it back on when was away and its not been noticed since.
