Its the Dash illumination button, when sat in the vehicle, above or too the left of your knee is a button on the underside of the dash, if you have the lights on and the dash is not illuminated it just means that you've knocked the button with your knee...

There is one on my Chim - '95 (above left knee - a bit like the boot release button, but on the other side of the steering column). It turns off the dash illumination - not sure why you'd want to turn it off, but there you go!

PS - know anything about vibrating clutch pedals ?

Not specifically something I've experienced - but assuming that the vibration is felt when putiing pressure on the pedal, it would suggest a release bearing or diaphragm spring problem. There would need to be something causing the clutch fork to oscillate back and forth - so any misalignment of the release bearing, which in turn could be caused by it being pressed against the diaphragm spring if this is partially failed (possibly some of the fingers snapped or weak). This oscillation would then be transfered through the hydraulics to the pedal.
If you've got a T5 gearbox then there is a nice large inspection grommet at the bottom of the bellhousing through which you may be able to make some assessment of any gross abnormalities, otherwise it wuld have to be gearbox out and inspect the clutch directly.
Hopefully someone else may have had experience of this and just possibly give a less bleak assessment.

My 99 Chimaera has a button exactly by my left knee. It's the same type as the window buttons but operates a fresh/recirc air flap. I think it's only fitted to aircon cars.

Unsuprisingly, mine no longer works.

I have the same button for the air con on my 98 Chim, but I have yet to find out what it does.

Guess it doesn't work either.

FWIW the button used to create a whirring noise only audible with the engine off - it no longer creates this whirring noise. Couldn't say it made a blind bit of difference to anything else though.

To repeat the question asked above...............

Why would you want to turn the instrument lights off anyway?

The explanation I was givien by the dealer is that when driving at night the dash lights are a bit bright and can be distracting so they put a switch to turn them off. Why they didn't just fit a dimmer I do not know. Hay thats one of the quirks of owning a TVR

Get on an unlit road at night, flick the dashlights off (not the headlights)
.....only then will you understand. Its a pretty cool effect the first time you do it but admittedly it wears a bit thin fairly quickly...

Its a feature shared by TVR and SAAB - one of the latters' nods to its aviation heritage - fighters apparently used to have blackouts on the instrument panel presumably for navigational 'night sight' reasons.

Speaking personally - at night on a motorway, the dashlights tend to 'wobble' up and down in my peripheral vision.

It's purely my eyes being a bit duff but if it was any worse might well make me a bit nauseous (drove with a hangover once and it wasn't fun becos of this).
