Storage above stairs

Hi- considering that most of the PHers live in mega mansions this may be unusual question.

We r struggling for storage space in house and was thinking about having a largish storage cupboard built in space about stairs (standard 3 bed semi house and I am talking about stairs from hallway to upstairs.. hope this make sense). I am not talking about storing all the gold bars in the house but just bedding and quilts mainly....

I haven't actually seen one done ever and not sure if this is feasible, any downsides (other than losing ceiling clearance maybe and how will it look)

I've thought about doing this, but one thing puts me off - increased difficulty trying to get large items (bed frames, wardrobes) up the staircase.

if you are aware of that potential issue then maybe you could design something that when required could fold flat. maybe where the base and top just clip in and the doors fold in half. forgive me if that does not make sense
i have often wondered why beds have to be so close to the floor. why cannot they be 1 metre above the floor with storage underneath?

My father did it in the house where I grew up, and I remember thinking it was such a brilliant idea that it's surprising it isn't done more often. He essentially built a cupboard against the 2 walls at the highest part of the void and we stored airing-cupboard-type-stuff in there. Nothing to stop you if there's room.

I was thinking about boxing in above the stairs, and fitting the doors inside the room rather than facing onto the staircase. Putting the doors onto the staircase with a foldaway cupboard would work, but I'd need a ladder to access the contents.

Ideal solution for getting big stuff upstairs was discovered years ago - a "coffin drop" hatch from the upstairs landing or bedroom to the ground floor. Had one in my last house, an old cottage with a narrow and steep staircase. Not much use it the upstairs floors have fitted carpets, so I boarded it over.
