Internal door hinges are squeaking on a couple of doors. Ive tried DWD40 and a silicone spray, made a difference for a day then back to normal. Google reveals a whole bunch of solutions, some of which surely are old wives tales, so looking for real life Pistonhead suggestions on how to resolve - because its starting really annoy.

Oil or grease should stop a squeak.

oil is the obvious, but was concerned about residue drips making a bit of a mess of the carpet.

The top and bottom hinges might not be completely aligned so they are 'fighting against each other' hence the squeak.
Try taking out all but one of the screws in each hinge, swinging the door open and closed a couple of times so that the hinges find their proper alignment then refitting the missing screws.

The best oil I've used on hinges has been Abus PS88. It's never dripped or made a mess of the carpet: a quick squirt, wipe off any extra with kitchen roll, and job done. The advantage of PS88 is that it doesn't attract dust or dirt (ideal for door hinges, locks, etc). Brilliant stuff!

Also, PS88 is handy at this time of year to prevent car door locks from freezing.

WD40 isn't a lubricant, but it does stay wet and this attracts dust and dirt. WD40 also thickens with age, which compounds the problem over time.

I'm surprised silicone spray didn't help, so brrapp may be right. If you've already applied WD40 and silicone, then mixing lubricants doesn't help matters. You may want to clean out or replace the hinges, then stick with one lubricant (silicone or ideally PS88).

Don't use too much?
Wipe after applying to remove excess?

Lift the door off the hinges (slide a belt under the door), CLEAN the pins, grease and replace.

Are you spraying WD40 on both sides of the hinge, ie with the door shut and when open from the other side?

TBH, it always works for us.

WD40 isn’t a lubricant wink

WD40 will just wash what lubricant there is off.

3 in 1, engine oil (freely available), chainsaw oil is designed to be tenacious, but not everyone may have it in the cupboard..

Or for a few quid you can replace the hinges with ball bearing fire door hinges.

Lucas Red 'n' Tacky. Put it on, move it so that it works its way in to the hinge, and forget about it.

Works really well on poly bushes, so a hinge will be no problem for it.

Swap the cheap pin/butt hinges for ones with ball bearings. No more squeaks.
