Can anyone recommend a beginner's guide (book, website, whatever)? Have a film based SLR and am thinking of getting a digital one also, but have no idea about even the basics of digital photography - am thinking of a Canon 350D/20D on the basis I could use my existing Canon and Sigma lenses (is this correct)?

Thanks

If you're up to speed with a film SLR you'll adapt to a DSLR without a book - well, just the manual!

Yes, you can use your existing lenses but they will seem 60% longer than before, so you may need to get a new wide angle.

What you will need is a decent computer, and ideally PhotoShop, to make the most of your images. Not so much 'plug and play' as 'poke and discover'.

Enjoy

If you go the Photoshop route, there's always the Dummies series. In fact they probably have a Dummies Digital Photography book, come to think of it that might be somewhere to start.

When you start poking Photoshop I can recommend Martin Evening's "Adobe Photoshop for Photographers"

Of the magazines out there on the shelves, Amateur Pornographer.....*ahem*...sorry, that should read Photographer is better than it ever used to be and I quite like the approach that Photography Monthly takes.

Link at:

www.photographymonthly.com/

Of the website's that are interesting, I quite like the following...

http://luminous-landscape.com/
www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html
www.cleanimages.com/default.asp#

...and for inspiration, you musn't miss out on:

There, that should keep you busy for ten minutes......
