disposing of batteries

just doing a tidy up, and found two old d1x batteries, NiMH ones. I feel a bit guilty about just throwing them in the bin, I think in some countries it's even illegal to do this. is there a proper way of getting rid of them?

I'm not being wholly helpful here I realise, but we get a paper bag to go in the recycling bin... So presumably the local tip will have suitable facilities. Possibly a tyre/battery type garage will let you dump them in their skip.
