I was away in Devon for the weekend.

Good chance to play with my 10-22 lens.

I think this image needs more punch or something...

I think the sky is fantastic though.

I'm asking you guys to play with it and show me what you want...

Nice shot Bee_Jay! That sky is stunning...

It looks even better imho if the contrast and saturation are bumped up and if it is made slightly darker overall - it makes the image even more dramatic than the original. And also a little unsharp mask to finish it off! Something like this perhaps:

Wow, posted and then saw what had just been put in above. That's fiery and spectacular from poah ! By the way, does anyone else see a face in the cloud on the top right ? Could be a Greek God or something ?

Anyway I'm a sucker for sunsets so here's my , more pastel, take on it, work Performed:
1. Decided I preferred the image in landscape format so went to Edit->Transform->Distort and stretched it out a bit, well, alright, quite a lot !
2. Selected the sky area, created an adjustment layer for Selective Colour... and played around with the proportions of each colour until I got something I liked.
3. Merged the adjustment and original layer.
4. Duplicated layer, used Overlay blending mode and reduced opacity of the upper layer to about 25%.
This gave me the image below.

Now for my favourite trick...
a) Create a new layer
b) Using the rectangle selection tool select a large rectangular area about 1.5" away from all four edges inside the image area.
c) Feather the area to give a nice soft edge - 57 pixels in this case but usually more.
d) Select the inverse of this area
e) Use the paint bucket tool to fill the new selection with black (you did fill in the new layer didn't you ? Please try not to swear too loudly before you undo !!)
f) Reduce the opacity of the black border you have created to between 5 and 15%
You will now have an image with subtly darkened edges that gently keep the eye focused on th emiddle of the image and prevent it from wandering out. The example below is slightly over-done at 18% to show what I mean.

Nice te5t1cle!

Masking is definitely something I need to understand better - anyone know of any good online tutorials on this? I really don't understand it fully...
