Another interesting evening for sunsets and for some reason tonight there were a lot of decaying vapour trails around (the only real clouds seemed to be low on the horizon). The vapour trails produced some unusual effects for a few minutes. Here is an example.

The effect doesn't come across quite so well on the web as it does directly on the monitor.

I like it looks almost surreal.

Thanks Magnus.

I thought it looked quite surreal as well - more so in the photo than in plain view at the time. But of course that effect is because of the degree of telephoto applied. Some of the others look like 60's and 70's sci-fi artwork!

Rattled off 45 shots in 13 minutes - I love digital. So much more cost effective than 35mm for this sort of use.

Hey Q, Meant to ask... what's that in the foreground? looks like a big pylon or oil refinery and a mosque - you're not near Basra are you?

Great pic btw... I can see it as a poster.

Basra? Sometimes feels like it when the local news reports events in Nottingham!

GC - watched your film the other night, first time in ages. All sorts of bits I had forgotten.

The sunset object is an Electricity pylon but the cables only leave one side. The site it is on used to have a coal fired power station but it was demolished about 8 years ago. Site re-development just started this year - a 190 acre distribution centre. But the pylons will stay because there is some form of power network junction for the national grid or something like that and the land is still owned by Powergen or whoever.

You may also spot a rooftop TV aerial on the right of this shot, a more general view. The rest of the foreground is just trees.

Also got this one which seems to benefit from a large gamma adjustment. T-shirt picture perhaps?

Other than rotating and cropping the others are 'photoshop' free. This one has only had gamma adjustment applied using ACDSee.

Other than some bracketing of ev's I left the rest of the settings to the camera with the shots being exposed for the sun using either 'normal' mode or the camera's 'Sunset' mode, which goes down 1/3 of a stop and ups the saturation level but afaik that is all.

PS - I love the crossed vapour trails btw - works well!
