Evenin' all.

Seeing as my D30 has finally gone "oh for fs sake" and stopped working, it's time for a replacement.
Being a poor student, my only option is an ebay special, and herein lies my question. Do i go for something newer and of a consumer ilk (D60, 300D) or something older of a professional ilk (Kodak DCS520 etc). I'm perfectly happy with the resolution of the D30 (3.something mp), and to be honest it's a bit too much as i never print. Seeing as my cackhandedness had already put pay to one DSLR i think a more robust one would be a good idea.

So from the point of view of someone who actually knows their arse from their E-TTL (i.e. you lot), features or resolution?

Also, any reccommendations of things i've not thought of to replace the D30 with would be welcomed

I think you answered your own question. If you're never going to need more than 3Mp, why pay more for more? I suppose the only exception is that the feature/s you want might only be available on a camera of, say, 6Mp.

go for the newer ones - its not just the resolution that increases but the overall image quality.

for other options consider the Fuji range, although the S1 is a Nikon lens fit only (I think) and I assume you're looking for Canon? If not, the S1 is a really good camera, I started off my proper photography life with one, and I wouldn't say that the image quality was much behind a D1X/D100 etc. The only problem with Fuji cameras is that they need two sets of batteries, which is really stupid.

From feeling them, I've found the Nikon to be far better built than the similarly priced Canons. It just feels tougher.

Try canon outlet on ebay.

You can get a 300d for < £300 with a one year warranty

Would they be factory refurbished returned faulty ones?
