One chink in my armoury that needs filling for best results is mobile lighting.

I'm used to video lighting, with redheads (850W) to arrange the necessary ambient light for filming. They are fine when bounced off a suitable ceiling and/or wall, so I adopt the same kit for stills photography.

However, I hit problems when there are no suitable surfaces for bouncing (you know what I mean :hehe:). Pointing a redhead directly is a non starter as it gives horrible shadows. So I need some mobile lighting that is soft. I have some ideas but would be interested to see what you'd use to solve the problem. A typical scene would involve people at computer screens, sitting at a desk or working on a production line.

Thanks folks!

Yes, pretty young ladies to hold the lights for me.

Or not, bugger...

Anyway, back to the Q: always-on light or flash? Softbox, panel or brolly? How many watts?

Too many options... confused...

After just finishing a course on lighting a couple of strobe heads or a strobe and a big reflector with a shoot through brolly would prob fill your needs as long as you have access to mains supply. Need something like this www.elinchrom.com/. Go to products and look at stlye 100/400 BX or FX.
Shoot through brolly gives very nice soft light ( if not too far away from subject) and is very light and cheep compared to soft box.
Reflector needs to be as large as poss if head and shoulders or more (42 inch)

elinchrom also do a pack which is mobile and recycles quite quickly.. it used to be called a freestyle. I've got one. they are quite good. takes two heads and with a single head will go from 68ws to 1100ws. also you can put all the elinchrom assc on them.. soft boxes, dishes etc.. good value and quite portable and will work in a small studio if you want.

I just looked... its now called the ranger rx series and has a wider power range.. they are symetrical packs so for versitlity ..buy two!
