Just seen an ad for this and wondered what folk thought it might be worth?

1988 944 Turbo, 160000 miles. Was apparently restored a little over ten years ago but abandoned in a field in Scotland after sustaining accident damage shown. They want £3800 for it...

If it's mechanically sound and strong, and you can get that figure down, it could make a fun track day toy - cheap body repairs and a few mods.

I have seen these being pedalled quickly and competently on track. Could be fun at Knockhill.

Lowest he'll go is £3k, which I feel is still too much, but I may wait and choose my moment to get it as low as possible if it's mainly cosmetics.

Have a look at prices for straight ones and see how you feel. Seems like they're marching up in value nowadays.

My opinion is it probably is worth the £3k as long as what's shown is the only damage, it's mechanically sound etc.

I don't know what it's worth, £3800 sounds comical.
Assuming it isn't rotten body wise (aside the crash damage).
It will need a hell of a lot spent on it after living in a field for what looks like a long time. Depends if it runs really, even then whatever scrap value is these days for a turbo. Why leave it in a field? Might as well leave it in a pond.

Looking at the engine bay that's been very damp for a very long time, looks like a restoration project to me.

I think I'd want to be paid to take it away.

I can see a few mice nesting and eating away at the wiring loom over ten years. Try fixing that.... frown

Some good points, all useful in working out whether to go for it. Much depends on getting the seller to be realistic about condition and problems. So many see a quick buck and don't realise to 'do up a project' properly is a major and expensive undertaking for most.

It's a bit like folk who advertise an MOT failure that they say will cost pennies to fix before it flies through...

I'll ring the seller tonight and hit him with the mice and wiring loom argument, amongst many others :-)

Sitting in a field i would be really concerned about rust underside! Time you buy and spend out putting straight you could have bought one ready to go

I'll bet the brembos will have plate lift and the bleed nipples will all snap.
Every fastener will round/snap looking at the engine bay, etc etc.
Will you be able to look at it or get somebody to take pictures of inside the sills and at least see if the engine turns?

Unfortunately it's probably as rotten as a pear. Shame really.

Why the fk would someone park a nice motor like that in a bloody field after relatively minor crash damage?

Hoping to view it at the weekend. Will expect the worst, but there's no substitute for seeing it in the flesh.

If you can, I would consider taking a large slab and a jack, getting it in the air a bit, putting something large and solid underneath (so it doesn't fall and squash you), then having a proper poke at the underside with a screwdriver and a powerful torch.

Unless if course it can be driven a short distance to somewhere more sensible?

Take a battery, some petrol, and start it up. Check all the electrics work too.

Let it warm up before driving away though. Don't want to ruin the engine.

Not sure what you know about these. Crank nut is 24mm, might need a short extension on the socket due to the pas pulley. Without jacking it up it'll be tricky to get on the end of the crank, even then you will probably have to remove the undertray if fitted, mine hasn't got one so not sure.

The Sills can look fine from the outside but be rotten, listen for crunching if you push them from outside and pull the b Piller vent out to look inside/poke a camera in.

I'd want to know the age/condition of the timing belt before trying to start it. Unless it's before you do a deal, 5 years is the interval IIRC.

It could be worth £12k restored. You may spend £15k doing it though smile. It's worth what it would break for now, unless you like doing up basket cases.

Agreed with the above. It's worth what it will break for, which to be fair could potentially be 2-3k very easily.

So, is the car special. Does it have amazing service history, low owners, all the original extra parts (load cover, tools, spare wheel, compressor etc). Does it have original engine and gearbox. In other words what's it realistically going to be worth. And why would you, when you could just buy a half decent one. Only you can answer the last bit.

You do see these going for big money. But don't for one minute think a ex write off 160k mile vehicle will be easy to shift for anything other than a very attractive price.

Am I right I'm thinking it's got sports seats?? The boltsters look bigger than mine. Although I've never actually seen sports seats, just heard of their value and rarity. Could be worth checking out as if they are they're worth a lot of money in black leather.
