I'm in the US (transplanted Brit) so it seems a 280i
is the latest model available to me.
Not that I could afford a really late one anyway.
I've read quite a lot about the wedges but would like to find out if the 280 six is the same as the six in the US Mustang. A ford identifying number for the engine would be good.
From what I have already gleaned the problem areas seem to be the window motors, no-one seems to know what planet they came from, and the frame under the sills.
The rusty frame could be less of a problem here as this type of car tends to be "put away" for the winter.
Thanks for any help

Hi Jeff,
Here is some info on the 280i engine. www.lyndon-dickens.co.uk/cologne.htm As you can see there was a connection with the so called Mustang 2 but I don't believe that the Capri or the Mustang used a FI version. (I wonder how TVR federalized the emissions package if Ford wasn't still bringing the engine in in the mid 1980s? )

There are not many wedges left and so the turn-over in thin. Good ones are in the $10,000+ range, tattered ones in $5,000+. Keep any eye on eBay and Hemming b/c you will need a nationwide net.

What part of the country are you in? Grady

Jeff,
Welcome to the US. As far as the 2.8 litre Cologne Ford engine goes, Grady's information was good. To
add to that, the block in the TVR was similar to that
used in the Ford Mustangs, Mercury Capris, and Ford
Ranger pickups in the mid to late 1970's but the heads,
valvetrain, intake and other parts were quite different. The Bosch injection was never available
in the US on this engine except in the TVR application.
As far as looking for cars available, you can check
out the TVR Times by joining the TVR Car Club North
America or come to our annual club gathering this
month, Oct. 11-13 in New Jersey and see numerous
examples first hand.
You can see our website at http://clubs.hemmings.com/tvr/ for membership information and information on Woodwork 2002.
Regarding problem areas, that can vary based on the
type of care the car has had. For the wedge cars,
some people have experienced window motor problems which sometimes are faulty switches, and other times
the motor itself. Look for a car with a documented
history and you will generally get one with minimal
problems, little or no chassis rust, and a car that
will provide you with miles of enjoyment. One
good thing about having a TVR in the US is the network
of club members to offer support whenever you have
a question.
Let me know if I can be of help to you at all.

Thanks for the info.
Both of the links went straight to my favorites.
This seems to be a very good board.
I shall certainly try (very hard) to get to Lebonon on
the Friday. I know one of the weekend days would be better but alas I work at weekends. I'm in Chews
Landing, NJ, that's in the South.
I saw one 280i recently it was sadly in very bad condition.
Thanks again.
Jeff
