Have you posted this on a mk1 forum, the people there should be able to advise?

My other half had problems with his oil reading very recently, I don't know if he got around the problem.

I've posted around various places...

Did he fix his and if so how? I'm not even sure which wires to check, or how to check the sensor etc etc as the Haynes is a bit thin on this issue.

Cheers

I've just had a look and a wire (from a clump near the distributor) has come out - it's black, and has no end attachment i.e. the internal copper wire is exposed. I'm assuming this has managed to work it's way out of wherever it has come from...

Is this the oil sensor wire and how do I get it back in bcos it's in a jolly awkward place :S

It's quite possible that's the correct wire.

you need to find the oil pressure sensor which should be below the oil filter (and slightly to the right of the filter) and to the left of the exhaust manifold. Should be round-ish - diameter of a deodorant can and about an inch deep. This usually has a copper nipple on the front face that the connector would usually slip/clip over. Since you have a bare wire the connector itself may still be on the sensor or have dropped off previously and previous owner had wrapped the wire around the nipple. The connector should be black, rectangular with a slot and have copper flat-spring contact in the slot.

The way I checked my sensor was to get the rear off-side of the car quite high off the ground and slide under the car from the rear, under the exhaust outlets. Once my face was past the sump I could see what I needed to do, but it is quite tricky getting two hands/arms into the space - for me this was the easiest way. For gods sake make sure the car will not fall off an axle stand! Lying like this under a MKI will cause death should it drop!!!

Where are you based? If you get stuck and aren't too far from Northampton, I could pop over and give you a hand???

I'm based in Kent - so a bit far away unfortunately - but thanks nonetheless. I'll have a look when I get in tonight and if it cannot be fixed from above i'll nip it to a friends garage and pop it on the lift. That should allow safe access to the underside - hopefully it is just a case of putting the wire back into the connector - but fingers crossed...

Thanks for all the info btw - alwasy best to hear it first hand from someone who's experienced the same problem.

No probs mate

My oil pressure problems were entirely different to yours, but it did involve removing the connector, cleaning and replacing it.

Don't know if you remember, but I was the bloke bidding on ebay for the red MKI in Rushden (near Northampton). You'll be releived you didn't win the bidding! A couple of days after collecting the car, I got it serviced with a new cambelt. We were setting the CO/Emissions and thought it just wasn't sounding right. So we did a compression test and found problems with rings, valves and/or head gasket. It was cheaper to source a replacement engine than to rebuild the original. The replacement engine turned out to be a bit worse for wear and had a few teathing problems i.e low oil pressure and very periodic white smoke from exhaust indicating another engine with head gasket faults! But the symptoms have disappeareed completely, oil pressure is at normal so we are thinking it may have just been old oil that got places it shouldn't during transportation. The oil pressure would have been down to the sensor damaged during removal from old engine. All sorted now (fingers crossed).

I got pictures of the new engine in here:

Blimey that engine bay is awe inspiring - nice work!! I see you've done the air-filter mod... once I get hold of a nice cone filter that's on the cards for me...

Had a little check on the wire that's popped out and i'll definatley need to get under the car - so i'm going to take it to a friend who can lift the car safely.

I picked my MR2 off e-bay actually - and (touch wood) it's doing well... Although now i've said that... hehe
