Sorry can´t find the thread anymore on electric door locks. I´m thinking about fitting some.

Has anyone been able to get wrid of the black "doorknobs" on the outside of the door? Is the one part I least like about my car looks a bit too plastic for such a cool car.

Mine work fine for me but they are not operable with the key lock only the alarm remote. I believe Stig is working on central locking but seem to remember he was trying to get it working from the key.

The outside push button actuates the latch mechanism when pushed, so to remove these buttons, the electric actuator must be powerful enough to trip the latch system. My setup - whick looks very similar to Steve_D's only controls the locking mechanism, which seems to require less force to trip, and easier to incorporate. You might be looking for a power latch kit such as used on streetrods?

I wanted to keep the door locks but wanted to avoid scuffing the body with my collection of keys so I fitted central locking as well. It wasn't easy coming up with a mechanism that worked...it took over a month of weekends and much cussing to come up with something that was reliable. The result is quite simple though as the pics show:

If you wanted to replicate this then I'd recommend fitting the Ultima door locks and getting them working perfectly with the key. Then make an accurate template out of card of the mounting holes for each door in turn. Mount the door lock for the door in it's template before building the mechanism around it.

There are two tricky bits in the design. Getting the right throw on the extra bellcrank that is attached to the lock mechansim is important. To account for the inevitable misalignment of the motor movement I attached a long M3 bolt to the eye in the end of the motor. I then spaced this away from the bellcrank with washers and a nylock holding the stuff together.

This design has been working in my car for the last two years and has been perfect. The key is a little stiffer than normal because you have the motor to move as well but I don't see any way of making it better. There is basically no added friction and the locking action is positive but doesn't place much strain on the motor.

I am in the process of purchasing a system from a contact in germany. As soon as I recieve it I will post details and photos. This system will be operated be a push button on the door which is de-mobilised by an electronic fob.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
When you get the system from germany I would be interested in how it works Rich,
Where did the other central locking motors come from? are they sourced from another car or do they come from an alarm kit.

thanks

I got mine from the same folk that sold me my alarm...at great expense. Discovered afterwards that Maplin (www.maplin.co.uk) sell them for under £10 each. Pretty much all alarm systems will drive them directly all you need to do is wire them up.
