Has anyone got any experience of these? Saw one for sale this afternoon and it got me thinking - something that ugly must have some good points!

Is it going to be quicker than the MRT? And what about through the twisties?

Tuned ones walk all over many a bigger beast!
Stunning traffic light GPer's.Very light.
An aquaintance had a highly modified one & it really went like stink.Usually thrashed the '33,up to ~50 60mph.
The Weak link in the GTiR's performance is that its really pretty fragile(esp gearbox),said friend had much wallet thrashing.
So,almost unbeatable hot-hatch performer, but be prepared for some regularly expensive TLC.

Had 1 for nearly 3 years, most excellent car Mine had 286bhp @ 1 bar and engine wise was very strong, gearbox broke twice, once a selector problem and the 2nd time 5th gear broke, apart from that it had no probs and I did use it hard including a few track days.

Dont get me wrong, I have no desire at all to own one, just wondering what they are like?

What do they kick out standard? Is it a 2.0 litre turbo? Are there many standard ones about?

Yeah 2.0 Turbo. Standard about 240. Getting to 300 is pretty easy.

I really loved mine, and in 2 years of abuse I only broke the original exhaust from 1992 so pretty good going.

When it was standard recorded 1/4 mile in 13.9 and 0-60 in 5.5. But just slight tuning made a big difference to how it felt so I imagine it ended up a fair bit faster.

Wow...that's an impressive power to weight ratio, even as standard.

Is the engine related to the Skyline's in any way?

Engine is a SR20DET 4-cylinder 2L, not related to the RB-series of inline 6-clinders in the Skyline at all... RB is even Iron block SR is alloy. SR is a great lighweight engine if a little fragile when you really star pushing them.

GTiRs are fast ships, but not up to much in the handling department.... I've driven a few and it feels like a standard grandma-spec Pulsar X1-R.... just in fast-forward.

AFAIK the '92-ish GTiRs were getting 220 PS (about 217 bhp). Looks like a fun trolley though!

Great fun. A little crude perhaps, but bloody fast.

Gearboxes as mentioned, and brakes. Terrible terrible brakes.....

Having had an MRT (rev1) and an imported GTi-R, I'd say that (in standard form) the MRT feels quicker and is certainly a lot more involving to drive.

With the Pulsar, all you needed to do was point and floor it. Aside from some understeer, it sorted everything out for you (as I belive it shared the Skyline's ATESSA 4WD system).

As already mentioned, shite brakes, suspect gearbox and fugly!

Nah - hence my 'bit crude' comment.

The Attessa system used in the T4 and GTI-R and GTI-RA use a viscous LSD in the rear and a viscous coupling in the transfer case. They are not the intelligent systems found in the later Skylines.
