Hi
thinking of dropping one of those nice Honda S2000 units into my midget:
how much power can the std midget rear axle take?
what about the advantages of adding uprated half shafts, double bearing kit?

any suggetsions on alterntive rear axle set-ups?

thanks

Have a talk with Frontline Spridget (forget the web address) regarding the rear, seriously doubt it could take 250bhp without mods - seem to remember the k-midgets blowing half shafts with only 180 bhp. To get that sort of power down you are going to have to think of fitting anti-tramp bars or the frontline rtl system.

Would seriously consider the use of the civic type-r engine instead of the s2000, better spread of torque and a more driveable engine. Plus plenty of kits for the civic to get more power out of it....

Must agree with SebringMG the original diff is only good to 150bhp and thats at a push.

You will certainly be needing anti-tramp bars and a pan hard kit at the least with that amount of torque as the twisting motion will cause you some greef.

Im running at about 100 bhp with a standard diff and no pan hard or anti tramp but going above that and you realy should look into better front and rear suspension eg Nylon bushes, spax suspension, uprated brakes front and rear if you can afford that as well.

I already have pan-hard, tramp, LSD etc on rear and uprated suspension, brakes etc on the front.
current engine produces 80 at the wheels.

The Thinking behind the S2000 is the sound is amazing and they are more easy to come by than the typeR's. I was orginally looking at the toyota RWD twin cam - but they are difficult to come by now.

you have confirmed my suspition that either a decent K (ie a 1.8) or civic R or Honda S2000 anytning with real grnut is going to mean an axle change.

hence i'm looking for suggestions as to what would fit and take the power

I managed to grind off the half shaft splines on my Midget with regularity with only the standard 1500cc.

Not sure on what power that axel could take but you will find on one of those links there is also a MG with a Chevy engine in and its axle must be taking over 200bhp

Have a bash at searching on Google I remember when I was originally deciding what to do with mine I spent plenty of work time looking.

There was a very good site with good photos of that rx7 rear axle, but I cannot find a link to it at the moment only the pics on the one you cannot see

Someone already posted a link to my car while being built. It uses a Mazda RX-7 rear with a 4-link suspension (Like a Lotus 7 A-arm rear). More info can be seen here:
www.rxtuner.com/farticles/RotaryMGMidget.pdf

It has held up to about 4 years of running including drag racing, auto-x, and road racing events holding about 200hp.
