Looking for a bit help bought a 89 ford escort cab 1.6i MFI k- jetronic few years ago and its a pain to run when cold. Starts first time when its been running a while. It had been sitting 15 years before i got it.
It starts first time but just cuts out , if i try to accelerate it , it cuts out quicker. It might not be fuel related but i done compression test when cold was actually good. Had the head re furbished , timing on and off a hundred times , got power to wur but the 4 filters were heavily dirty , new fuel tank and pump ( got fuel tester coming this week ) played with the metering flap/plate as well.
Any other ideas thanks

sounds like your metering head needs a refurb. I had similar issues on a Merc SL and despite much testing and cleaning I had to send the head unit off to be refurbed.
Well worth the money and runs like it should now !

It's a long time since I had an e21 323i with K Jet, but I seem to recall it's all about having the control pressure right.

Dirty fuel can cause a lot of issues, as can a sticky metering plate. There are a few simple tests you can do before going for the full on overhaul approach.

There is a great thread on troubleshooting the system somewhere on here. One of the TVR guys did a v thorough write up. Well worth having a look for.

Equally a long time since messing with K Jetronic on 80s VWs but overall fuel pressure and control fuel pressure are key to smooth cold running.

It sounds like it's running lean when cold. Old school trick - pump the brake pedal at idle when cold and see what happens to the idle speed. Pumping the pedal allows more air into the engine via the brake booster. Idle speed goes up means car's running rich. Idle speed going down means car is running lean.
