So I have a snapped gear cable on an off road we we own, a new cable is hard to find.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix the snapped end of this ?

Thanks

One of these....

Weld the snapped off bit to that (after you’ve clamped it to the cable).

Edit - you might not even need to weld it up if you can wrap the cable around the broken off piece, them clamp them together.

Twist the strands of loose cable together and add some solder to hold it.
Then push it into the end that has come off and solder it properly.

Soldering iron and solder are cheap if you don't have one.

What state is the metal S bend in? If it's just a matter of reattaching a bowden cable to it, that should be easy enough. If the end needs replacing/repairing that might need either bending up new from rod, or a weld repair - difficulty level would depend what it's made of.

Thanks foe the advice, I have both a welder and a soldering iron.

Didn’t think the solder would hold it.

The end is absolutely fine not bent or damaged at all.

Thanks

Can you confirm the problem is just that the cable inner has broken close to the end fitting?

Literally at the end

The end looks like die cast zinc, so no soldering or welding will be possible. Also if you make a new end and attach it to the cable, you will have lost some of the free length.

What vehicle is it?

It’s on an off-road buggy / gator that we are putting on the road.

If I’m honest I think I have found another cable but I’m a cheapskate ... and they are £70 each and I need 2 !!

Only you can decide the quality/hassle/cost trade-off, but this is simple to DIY if you're OK getting your hands dirty and aren't to fussy about how it looks.

If the end fitting is zinc as suggested, it'll be difficult to solder to but not impossible. You would probably find it easier to bend up a new end fitting from mild steel rod or weld one up from a clamp-on cable end..

If you want a less DIY solution you can buy cable end fittings from a ship's chandlers which would do the same job, but they're likely to be a significant fraction of the cost of the new cable.

If you find the inner is now too short to give you enough travel, if the cable routing allows it you can trim an inch or so from the outer to make up the difference.

Well it was all going a bit too well .... make a new end up out of steel, attached the cable with a steel tie and put in couple of welds .... all looking good until I thought let’s put one last one in ... abs welded straight through the cable !! Prat !!

So ordered 10m of new 2mm steel cable from Amazon and assorted fixings and will have a go again tomorrow.

Many thanks foe the advice .... so far !!

Google “speedy cables” I’m sure they would either make one or fix it.
