Does anyone know the likely cause of a rattily motor in a handheld battery powered impact wrench?

Depends on how easily it comes apart, some makes are easy, others makes are not.

Tried to google how to replace it but, with no luck. As makita is so popular I would have thought they'd be guides all over the place.

This ebay seller lists all the parts, but does not mention a bearing:

What exactly do you mean by rattling? They're supposed to rattle, some people even call them a rattle gun.

Rattle from the motor.
I cannot describe it any other way. But its not the normal sound you get from them as my friend has the same one with no noise. If you also look on ebay, theres many sold with "A rattle to the motor" at discounted prices. So its definitely a fault within the unit. But what? since theres no bearing listed on the parts list.

I think you'll just have to pull it to pieces and have a look, I'd expect it the gearbox or hammer and anvil to be making the noise, may just need a clean and lube, they seem easy enough to strip.

looking at that parts diagram I would say that the bearings will probably come pre installed on the rotor (part 32)

The picture on this listing for the part seem to agree

If thats the case then the part is expensive at £35. Probably not worth fixing it. If it was a regular ring bearing then it would cost £6.

pretty certain they will be a standard size, you could just disassemble the unit, pull the bearings off the rotor and just buy the right ones from any bearing stockist.

They should be stamped with the ID number. Or if not measure the ID, OD and width to get the right ones

Not worth spending £35 to fix a tool that would cost £150 to replace confused

This model is £50 to £80 used.
Other makita models brand new can be bought for £70 odd.
