There's a sign on Sidmouth St in Reading which perplexes me...

Sidmouth St is the link road that the useless traffic planning division in Reading have decreed should be part of the ringroad/one way system to the South East of the centre. As you travel North there is a yellow sign which states "Give way to traffic from other side of the junction" - just before you turn left or right on to the ringroad. Opposite is a small road serving a few houses and businesses. The junction is controlled by traffic lights which allow access at the same time from North or South. Northbound traffic can turn left, right or go straight over. Southbound traffic can only turn left (ie same direction as northbound traffic turning right).

Does this yellow sign have any legal standing if I hit someone coming from opposite?

On the information given at this stage I am of the opinion it is advisory only. To be contravened it would need the normal Give Way sign and lines at the junction. These are not present as you say traffic lights control.

Next time I have my snout in the TSGD"s will try and check and come back if different. Cannot recall the sign mentionaed as one requiring NOIP (fail to conform).

It will have some standing if a bump occurs to support a due care, more so it has been authorised by Sec of State..

I'm pretty sure that is not a type approved sign, like DVD I don't recall it in Traffic Signs Manual or Traffic Sign Regulations and General Directions - abd since it's yellow, this would reinforce the fact that it's advisory only.

sounds pretty stupid to me - I have never seen that situation before.

Thanks guys

As you can imagine its a prettys stupid situation. Traffic coming from the South flows in a steady line. So I guess the council planners put the sign there to help the people coming from the North.

But when you've got 30 odd cars turning right in a line, it doesn't occur to you to stop and let someone out from the other side!

I am one of the cars that uses that road - I use both Northbound and Southbound as I work in the building just South of the main road.

That whole junction is a bit dubious - and I would say that the potential for a knock is somewhat higher than it should although at least no-one will be moving too fast.

<bump>

DVD - any joy?

Almost had another prang there last night, as I wasn't too keen on moving over for a Merc SLK...

Just to add - there are seperate filters for turning left and right (ie the little green arrows), although the timings are nearly identical for left and right.

It really is a spectacularly awful junction. Coming westbound along Queens Road, there is no traffic flow that stops you turning left onto Sidmouth Street. Is there a left-turn filter? Is there ^%*$

Also got to love the GATSO there whose lines go right up to the 40mph limit sign. (I'm sure that problem will go away one day when they decide to extend the 30mph limit outwards....)

Sorry Puggit unable to resolve from my current position.

Cannot locate the sign you mention and as far as I am aware not listed in TSGD but that doesn't mean it is an unauthorised sign as LA can get approval from Sec of Stat as a singleton.

Somewhere along the line they will be working from a Traffic Management Bible that I no longer have access to on non standard engineering works of which this seems to be a one off.

Can only suggest that you have a word with Reading Traffic Management Dept. Their accident record at the junction will only feature Injury or fatal. Near misses, which are an indication of danger, will not be recorded unless they set up CCTV on a survey. They may well be interested in your experiences and comments.
