I would say - doesn't seem quite sharp, not very good lighting, rather too much background. However I can't tell you what makes a good portrait, they just happen!

The best focal length for a portrait shot is between 80-135mm, with 135mm providing a more compressed background. The best portraits should attract the viewer's eye to the subject, so any distracting objects in the background should be avoided. One way to achieve this is to use a shallow depth of field, to blur the background. In any case, you will need an attractive model ... no offence Mr Barber !!!

portraits are the thing i'm trying to get my head round at the moment, they can be so hard to do well. i took this one of my GF's son but it was luck rather than management, especially where kids are concerned!

I find the bright white flare in the foreground a bit distracting, as such his face looks very much in shadow. As has been said, it should draw your eye to the person's face, whereas in this your eye after initially settling on the face gets quickly drawn away.

A good recipe for children, I discovered by chance at a family bash, is to wait about 15 yards from the slide and wait... you get plenty of chances as they come over the top!

nice shot simpo, the principle of them not seeing the camera seems to work well, as soon as they see it they start to play up so a good long distance ish shot sometimes is the answer

In my opinion wedge girl, that would benefit from a tighter crop, get rid of most if not all of the head in the foreground, leaving something like this:

edit to add - great expression though! well captured.
