did you stay in any of the Down Town hotels or closer to the track as I am finding that parking is expensive at around $50/day DT

We've generally stayed downtown - Courtyard Marriott at the Capitol which is a $30 sting per day for parking but is one of the more reason options - so it's walkable in the evenings. This hotel is also positioned right on the canal which is quite nice for an evening wander down to the river or to Victory Field to see the baseball.

Driving around is a breeze as there is no real traffic to speak of most of the time so even if you stay further out - Plainview or Avon would be well situated for IRP - it will only take you 15-20mins to get downtown when you want to. There is plenty of parking downtown with Circle Center being as the name suggests almost right in the middle and reasonable.

Don't forget that many of the nitro teams are based almost literally across the road from the main entrance to IRP and some will have open house events race weekend.

For the 500 there are three 'classic' places you need to go for food, all of which are deeply unhealthy.
Charlie Browns - This is on Main Street in Speedway. This is your classic diner where the walls are all covered with racing photos and memorabilia. During the lead up to the 500 you'll often see team members here. We've had breakfast sitting next to the legend himself AJ Foyt. I don't know if there is an equivalent for IRP and drag racing.
The Mug-n-Bun - Eating the tenderloin at this long standing drive-in on W 10th Street is a rite of passage for all racers.
Longs Donuts - Enormously popular. Another location you will often run into team members in the morning.
