Does anybody know much about these dampers?

My car needed some new dampers so they were replaced with some Monroe electronic dampers which is who are the OEM supplier from new.

Over sharp bumps there's a slight knock/noise . I didn't think the new dampers would be to blame for the noise so after replacing pretty much every suspension component the noise remained.

Short story is if I unplug either electrical connector the noise goes away!

I think when one damper is unplugged it defaults all dampers to their normal setting.

Does anybody know if the dampers need coding to the car or anything like that?

I'm trying to understand if the suspension control ECU had a problem whether that could be to blame for the damper noise. There is no warnings light to suggest there's a problem.

I don't know if your statement is right or wrong on them defaulting but I would have expected an unplugged one to basically be undamped.

If that is the case with an un damped shock it could possibly highlight an ARB drop link on the way out, which sounds like your description of the noise.

Does changing the suspension to comfort/sport affect the sound?

The car has had literally every arm, bush and drop link replaced. It was also driven with the ARB removed and the noise remained.

The suspension is silent with either damper unplugged. It ride perfectly well too so the dampers still do their job.

The noise does change slightly when the suspension is switched between comfort, normal and sport but is definitely still there on sharp bumps.

There is still resistance through the dampers when they are off the car so offer some damping ability when unplugged. It's hard to tell how much this changes when fitted to the car and plugged in.

Reason I asked is that a friend had a knock in his Golf DCC but it was way worse in comfort than in sport.
That was a brand new car, so it is possible that some dampers leave the factory with that (or similar) fault.

Can you tell if the noise is coming from one side or the other?

FWIW his sounded like a metallic hollow knocking sound.

It's very hard to tell which side it is. It could be from both!

No noise from the front though.

If it's a twin tube damper it may need bleeding during installation, and if that's missed and left any air pockets in the main chamber then these can produce a very harsh knock which can sound mechanical as they go through the valve.

I don't know what happens to the damping when your dampers are unplugged, but if the dampers are softened then the knock would be reduced too.

They were primed prior to fitting. I imagine they will be twin tube dampers.

Dear all,

Hi,

The root problem sounds very familiar to me. It would be very valuable to hear from the author if you solve this issue regarding noisy DCC dampers or just live with it.

It sounds unlikely in this case, but damper clunk is also symptom of a worn top mount.

I assume that the author replaced the top mounts together with new shocks or maybe I am wrong. I am having a very similar issue- after replacing both front shocks a soft knocking/clunking on road bumps has appeared from the right side(shocks DCC Monroe c2516s). From experience, I would say
that the noise sounds something similar to the worn antiroll bar bushings, something metallic hitting the plastic. Needless to say, the suspension has been checked several times in order to find something loose or not in good condition, and still everything looks fine. I understand that it is not possible to indicate or troubleshoot through the forum, therefore I am looking into whether the new shocks can be defective and if this is a common issue from the Monroe.

Hi, i have the same exact issues on my mk7 golf r. Ive changed all front suspension components; endlinks, top mounts, bushings and even 2 brand new oem dcc struts. Ive done the dcc adaptation as well. I too notice that if I unplug them the noise over bumps is gone.
Did anyone ever find a solution to this issue or this is just how this suspension sounds over bumps?
Ive driven an mk7 gli and mk8 golf r with dcc and they were completely silent over bumps.

I never resolved the problem. I was satisfied that there was no safety issue and that maybe it was a characteristic of the dampers for some unknown reason.
I sold the car in the end.
