Another PHEA Not the "Royal Thing" Run - 6th May 2023

Firstly I hope I'm not treading on any toes here

Back story

Bit of a tradition thing for me since way back when - All roads tend to be quiet when there is a Royal Event on

Now I do like the Norfolk/Suffolk coast road for a run but christ it’s fking grim at the weekend (pretty much all year round but really really grim in spring summer and autumn when the weather is good)

Many moons ago (back in 1986) I was living in Kings Lynn and there was a Royal Wedding (one of them who has turned out to be a bit sweaty married a ginger thing), much as I like the Royals the idea of watching a wedding on TV doesn’t appeal much so I decided I go for a drive in my little 205 – this little one below



For info it's a 205 XS in a posh frock 85 bhp from a 1360cc with a twin choke weber carb that made it quite fizzy to drive

I started on the back roads near KL initially and then ventured on to the coast road near Thornham and suddenly the coast road was glorious, sod all traffic and I ended up in Yarmouth a few hours later. It still rates as one of the best days driving so I foolishly try to recreate it when the Royals have a significant event......

Problem is the Royals don’t have that many significant events that keep the population confined to the living room and glued to the TV.....

Well there was Queens Elizabeth’s Funeral last year but well I thought than might be taking it too far………

Any interest in a run??

Post up your general interest below (give me an indication of location ie east or west start point preferred)

Usual PHEA Run rules apply

• stick to the limits in the towns villages

• go at your own pace where the NSL applies

Route will be handed out on the day at a suitable start point(s) (obv it will take in some of the coast road but it won't be just all coast road)

I think one of the runs we had a start point at each end - meet in the middle and the two groups finished at each others start point so that might be an option again keeps the groups size down so we don't get locals shaking their fists as 20 cars go past their house at a steady 29mph (Seriously it did happen )

If I find this on page 3 in a weeks time I know I'll be on my own

Mid point stop can be arranged for comfort break food and refreshments etc

Ian, brilliant idea! I was planning to spend that day driving some of my favourite country roads at a sedate, strictly legal speed, just not slowing down for the corners. My plan was to do the fish and chip run route to Aldeburgh or Southwold, but I'm open to alternatives.

OK so there is a total of four right now (e-type phil is going to be joining us but he's not on PH)

I'd better firm up some arrangements and see if Mike-P wants to join us for a Norfolk/Suffolk/Cambs border start point

I'm working on the principle that the roads will be quietest when it's on TV so if we had a start point of 9am at Thetford and then we headed cross country on some back roads to the start of the coast road past Kings Lynn we'd be around 10am and that would be about spot on (in my mind)

Then we See how it goes - a stop somewhere midday ish depends on progress

Finish Yarmouth / Aldeburg / Southwold way mid afternoon seems a good plan and from memory puts you close to where you need to be?

Tesco Supermarket - the parking spaces closest to the Fuel station would be my suggestion as all participants are coming in from that side of the town (except me but it's same distance)

Should I wear a red rose?

Well run review - traffic could have been better in places but it wasn’t nose to tail like it normally is so we’ll chalk that up a a win

Coffee break at the cliff top car park got the group back together again.

Crab sarnies in Cromer (apparently it’s a must do thing so I had a bacon roll)

Andi will be known as “3 scoops 2 cones” from this point on

The run home from Southwold was actually a good one

I did my best to keep Paul behind in the GRY but I have the feeling he could have passed me at anytime and was just being polite

Scores on the doors (brim filled the tank at the start point)

188.1 miles covered between 0905 and 1715 (1.5 hours stopped for lunch)

31.3 mpg

183 miles left according to the range thing

Great event Ian, a good way to miss the Constipation.

Total of 198 miles, so it's now known as the North Norfolk 200 (allowing for rounding).

Traffic in places was a pain, but made up for by the magic clear stretches.

Phil's almost a barrel roll was a spectacle not to be forgotten.

Roll on the next Royal event to be avoided.
