Awhile back, at least here in the states, you could get a roller-type throwout bearing with your clutch kit for the B, now it seems no one offers any alternative to the carbon-type bearing.

Anybody have any insights on this? Was the roller-type bearing unsatisfactory, or just not many people buying them?

I guess the carbon bearings will last long enough for someone who does not sit at lights with the clutch in, in gear, or worse, ride the clutch, but I would have been inclined to go with the roller-type on the next clutch job, thinking it's more durable.

I don't know what's in my car at the moment, is there a handy way to determine? I treat it as if it was the more fragile carbon type, ie keep the clutch depressed for as short a time as practical...(which I think is good form anyway, but...)

All I've come across are the Compound type - however...
Try checking out MGB Experience - it's based on your side of the pond and their regular contributors seem to be a pretty knowledgeable bunch of guys.. Try asking your question on their forum..
There's loads of info on just about any task you can think of.. and even suggestions for modifications.
There's even a global register for most models of B (or C)
The site can be found at www.mgbexperience.com start browsing, and I think you'll soon get hooked !

I think that they offer no real advantage over carbon throwout bearings since they wear as well. I have been looking into this too a while ago and will see if I can find more info on this subject and get back to you.

yeah - consensus is generally that they offer nothing over standard. The carbon one should last the life of the engine basically (100,000 miles easy), just change it when clutch is done for piece of mind.

Incidently what wears the bearing the most, is sitting at traffic with car in gear and foot on clutch. Get into the habit of dropping in to neutral at the lights and taking foot off clutch to give you a fair few more miles.
