A friend of mine has just been given a ticket for doing exactly 100mph on the M4

Does this mean an automatic ban ?

should do but no doubt he'll get away with it in court by saying he needs his car for work.

What 'ticket' was he given?

Was it a producer, NIP, or a fixed penalty notice ?

Guidelines state that 96mph is the threshold for a court appearance, for 100 I think usually results with between 4-6 points and a fine.
How many points has your friend already got?
Is he still within the 2 year probation period?

It was her first offence so no previous points and it was a producer

And???????? Was it at 3:15Pm past a school coming out or 3:15am on a deserted straight clear motorway with good weather.

Was He in a Old Lada or a Brand New Porsche. Give the details, that speed is perfectly ssafe in some circumstances and not in others.

So what?

Speed is only a tiny fraction of the criteria for consideration as to whether driving was in any way dangerous.

Unlikely. The beaks are unsympathetic to hardship caused to the driver by the ban. If you were the sole source of transport for a disabled or elderly person, on the other hand, you might get away with it.

No guarantees, of course.

This means nothing; either the driver was driving inappropriately or he wasn't.
It's possible that the others in the car could have been a source of distraction, but this will be dangerous at any speed.

Or a non-white, one legged, dyslexic lesbian, running from the tyranical ragime of some eastern european country, now part of the EU, who needs the freely supplied car to drive from her freely supplied house, to get to her "save the gay whale" meetings.

for some reason I dont see driving fast on your own when you're making the risk decisions is the same as when yu have a very yuoung child in the car who cannot make any decision. Maybe this is a gut instinct but it definitely doesnt sit right with me.

107 IS fast. closing speeds etc... are high, and a Mazda3 aint exactly Porsche dynamics. There is a relatively small percentage of drivers who can really drive UK roads relatively safely at this speed (not matter how good we all might think we are) and he aint one of em!

I got done at 103 on the A3 a few weeks ago, clean licence strong mitigation got £330 and 6 points, also got done about 6 years ago on A27 bang on 100 £200 odd and 6 points. So no I wouldn't expect a ban but it really depends on how good he's been in the last 5 years, remember the points stay on licence for 3 years but DVLA print out they use in court shows anything in last 5 years.

When I was a child I would be cheering my father to drive quicker

(ok so we lived in Germany with its autobahns)

Nonsense, surely ?

Crikey, most 4 cylinder cars will drive all day every day at 120 mph no problem.

In these days of 130 mph MPVs and 150 mph Ford Mondeos, I would estimate that 107 mph is a speed attainable by 90% or more of the cars on the road.

Which doesn't make it fast.

IMHO, over 155 mph is fast.

A ban is not automatic - magistrates are recommended to **consider** disqualification for 30 mph over a speed limit. If you give good mitigation as to why you should not be disqualified they may give more points or a higher fine.

It could be that you live miles from the nearest public transport, your wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant and you are a rep and the sole bread winner in the family. Bring out the violins.

Good luck.

Jesus. Speeding in North Yorkshire.....

You would have been better raping a 96 year old lady and then murdering her, her children, and her children's children!

Good luck, mate.
