I often pick up a few books from the charity bookshelf at the tennis club. among these was Overtaken by Alexei Sayle, for which I paid the standard hardback fee of £1.50.

When I got it home I was surprised to see the inscription on the title page, it certainly reads like it was written by Alexei Sayle and it looks to me like it was signed for Robert Harris (Pompeii, Enigma, Fatherland.)

Anybody got any interesting inscriptions?

Only one. I was interviewing Clive Chapman, son of Colin and boss of Classic Team Lotus, and I asked Clive if he'd mind signing my copy of Karl Ludvigsen's book about his father . I have never asked for an autograph or signature before or since , but as I was in thrall things Lotus in their heyday this was the exception. Clive signed - but in pencil. Seeing my quizzical look he held up the steel pencil and said - 'This was dad's drafting pencil . I thought you'd like me to sign with it ' . I did.
