Pretty much as per the title really....

At the moment im driving a Vauxhall Monaro VXR which ive owned and used as a daily for 10-11 years now but its getting a bit long in the tooth, has a long list of faults and im at the point where i need to either spend a good few grand on it or replace it, but what to replace it with? I keep looking at Mustangs, i do like the look of them, i like the fact that there is no shortage of Ford dealers to back them up and i do like a big lazy V8, but ive never driven a Mustang, one thing that does put me off is the hand brake, how Ford managed to change everything from left to right hand drive except that i have no idea!

So as per the title, what are they like to live with, are they good to drive, easy/cheap to maintain? Obviously driving a Monaro to me things like the high tax and petrol costs are normal so dont really matter.

In general Mustangs are simple souls and easy to live with,the newer they are the better they are. Personally I would keep the Monaro and throw some money at it,freshen it up and you will feel diferently towards it. Just my opinion,have owned my Mustang many years,but love the Monaro too,modern muscle in a usable package.

Would Ford dealers really be that knowledgeable? Not that common a Car. I know when I used to take my RenaultSport to Renault Dealer they had not seen one. (inspiring)

One thing re Tax is post 2017 Mustang was promoted (Autocar Articles etc) as one of the cars that was thirsty but cheap hence went in lower tax bracket ie sub £200 whereas earlier cars on emissions will be more like £700.

If you are on the cusp worth getting one on right side of threshold.

Get a manual, the 10 speed auto is awful, too many cogs, can never make its mind up which one it needs..

Should have used the 8 speed Audi and Iveco use, excellent box in use, 10 is a step too far.

Some context to my gearbox comment,

I took a " NEW " Ranger Raptor on a 250 mile delivery run, fitted with the same 10 speed auto box, coupled to a 3.0 V6 Volkswagen engine, with twin turbo, it is an epic machine, something you would happily take on a Grand Tour, and the box was great in that car, it takes pick up trucks to a whole new dimension, and I loathe the things lol.

it works great in the diesel too, so I am told.The VW Amarok will be just as good, as Ford now build it alongside the Ranger.

Then I had the return journey, a very low miles, 2017 Mustang 5.0 GT, what a dissappointment after the Ranger, the auto simply does not work with the V8, way to sensitive to the throttle, changing far to often, the rear end squatting down under power, like an over powered Capri, nowhere near the ride quality, or comfort, of a bleeding pick up truck lol.

I felt like carrying on to Scotland in the Ranger, and doing the North West 500, would happily load it up and tour Europe.

The Mustang, with the Auto box, not a hope, noisy fun, but that is about it, the sharp, constant changing and confused gearbox, was a real let down, the noise grating on a long trip, and ride quality was 60,s style, especially under power, woulfd not be my choice for a Grand Tour, and it was a GT.

It was far more economical, fuel wise, than the Ranger though.

I’ve got a 2020 Edition 55, manual.

Auto is rubbish.

Parts are cheap, Ford MD are cheap, it’s loud, it’s fun, it slides about, excellent for motorway cruising in quiet / normal mode (I’ve done my 600 mile commute in mine).

Fuel is really reasonable for a 5.0, 22 around town and I’ve seen 35 on a run.

Only issue I’ve had is with the heaters, for some reason they aren’t the best, in that they break, a relatively common issue but only about £90 each.

In summary an easy, cheap yet large car to live with, wife uses it daily at the moment.

Not got my stickies on a manual yet, but I suspect it is a much better car for it, the auto, as you say, is rubbish with the V8.

The only reason the Mach E exists, is so Ford could continue to sell the 5.0, it is cobbled together rubbish too, though not so hard to cobble together an EV lol, it has been happening since 1909, and a Mustang it ain,t.
