Early January 2024 can only mean one thing, time to start a new thread for this year. You know the drill by now, leave Lands End at 21:36 on the 21st, try to be at Ness Point by 04:30

Lots of roadworks last year, hopefully won't be repeated this year.

Hi all, will be doing it for the first time this year! Have a co-pilot so should be fun. Was looking into potential route, obvious better to decide on the day, but it seems as if the roadworks on the Cornish A30 section should be over by June (fingers crossed). Either way what have been your most sucessful route in previous years?

never heard of this before, but quite interested in having a crack at it.

So...i take it like from lands end c/p then to the ness point bit. Also, is it alot of people doing it, like a big meet of cars to start with?

I think it’s actually leave on evening of 20th and arrive as sun comes up on 21st, if you want to see all the druids and midsummer nutters as you blast past Stonehenge

In theory, yes the solstice falls on the 20th due to it being a leap year. But I feel as if more people would be able to do the 21st as it is a Friday-Saturday, at least that is the case for me!

So the 'Classic' route is A30, M5, A30 (again), A303, M3, M25, A12. However it's all roadwork depending. Last year they had the A30 in cornwall reduced to 50mph.

Just been checked the one.network website and there are no road closures planned on the 20th on the A30, A303 or M5/M4 route and the M25 and A12 are clear also.

There are still long term road works on the A30 at Chiverton to Carland Cross and also at the A303 at Sparkford but at that time of night, the delays are negligible.

However, on the 21st, the M4 is closed at night in both directions for a bridge removal between junctions 18 to 19 for the removal of the A432 Baminton Road overbridge.

Did this run successfully in 2014 and now my daughter wants to drag me along in her Mazda MX5 to cross it off her bucket list.

Are we thinking Friday night or Saturday night?

100% Friday night for me. People tend to do the run on the night of 21st into 22, regardless of when the actual solstice is.

The days either side of the solstice are virtually identical in length (less than a second’s difference, iirc), so the timings aren’t affected at all.

I think more people will go on Friday, and that’s what makes it fun imo. There will probably be quite a few doing it on Saturday night as well, so you won’t be on your own if you decide to do it then.

Possible road closure on M25 between Junction 25 to 27 clockwise for tunnel works 22:00 - 5:30 0n the 20th and 23:00 - 5:30 on the 21st.

The closures are booked Monday to Friday starting on June 3rd and due to finish June 29th.

Not always guaranteed to be working every night.

More details may be available closer to the date of the run.

No road closure on Saturday though.

Also, road closure on M25 anti clockwise between Junction 10 to Junction 9 on 20th at 22:00 to 21st at 05:00.

Road closure booked for M11 north around Stanstead Airport if considering a detour in the area.

Just realised that on the 21st, the anti clockwise route is completely open all the way to the A12, following Clarkson's original route.

The roadworks in the Dartford Tunnel won't be in progress on Friday into Saturday.
