When is a 50 a 40 or vice versa - Thousands fined

Interesting one this and surprised there was not already a thread.
The A20 out of London used to be 70mph then it was reduced to 50mph until recently and now it has been further reduced to a 40mph zone enforced with average cameras HOWEVER ...... the signs announcing the new reduction in limit were the wrong size and to throw a curved ball into the mix there was a 50mph sign on the nearside of the carriageway within the "new" reduced limit corroborated by many photos and videos.
Most of the media has picked it up and run a story. Lots of local residents have inadvertently received lots of tickets. the worst I have seen is a poor fella who has got 8 !!!!
It seems the new limit reduction was poorly advertised & signed but rigorously policed by the scameras. The Police have launched an investigation and TFL are obviously burying their heads in the sand stating they have signed it correctly blah blah blah, give us your money - you get the idea !
NIP`s are still still being generated but these proceedings must be considered unsafe until the result of the investigation one would think ?
