50ish gamer here also

You'll not go wrong with Red Dead 2, Far Cry also. I've been struggling to find a long game I can get into so this thread might be useful/

Played and liked (couple of console games in here as well):

Control - short but my word, what a finale
CyberPunk - I even loved it on release
Factorio - totally different but easy to lose hours
Stray
Days Gone
Witcher 3
Firewatch
God of War - console
GTA - console

I might end up going back and redoing Red Dead, I've done Days Gone 3 times now and I've just redone Metal Gear Solid V. Where's the new good stuff?

Games I tried and didn't like:
Dead Space
Fallout (any)
Palworld
Resident Evil

GTA will be good, same engine as Red Dead.

Battlefield games were good for team/online aspect.

Has GTA V got a game story or is it just bashing the shù$te out of each other?

Steam and epic. Epic do free games fairly regularly. Often belters.

You can add horizon zero dawn to your list, best game I've played in a long time. I'm also in my 50's smile

Tastes vary.

For straight up action it is hard to beat Doom 2016 or Doom Eternal.

If you are looking for more of a story Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077, both already mentioned.

Other great games for me have been
- Outer Wilds - delightful exploration / mystery
- Death Stranding - marmite post apocalyptic delivery game
- Control - a cool shooter with a supernatural twist and fantastic lighting
- Detroit: Become Human - choices matter
- NieR: Automata - very Japanese adventure / shooter

I'm a 50 year old gamer too!

GTA5 single-player story mode is incredible. So much more involving and emotionally intelligent than you'd expect.

Although very different superficially, Witcher 3 and RDR2 are similar in that respect. Like being the protagonist in an amazing book or film.
Both a little bit slow to get started, but become part of your life for quite a while.

Yes, but shop around and you can buy product codes on other platforms that you can redeem in Steam to get the game cheaper, so Green Man is one I use for that, just depends who has what on sale, it's never a massive amount but you can save a few quid per game.

Don't forget Black Mesa - a remastered version of the first game. Well worth a play.

GTA-V has a great story but does have more than a bit of ultra violence. GTA-Online uses the same launcher I believe but would probably avoid that unless you really love the style.

If you like relaxing exploration/sightseeing try MS Flight Simulator or Elite Dangerous.

Mentioned above The Witcher 3 is iconic for all the right reasons if you enjoy a fantastical adventure.

FTL is a very engaging little spaceship management game, it's way way way better than I've described it and you can play in short sessions.

Portal 1 & 2 and great adventuring puzzling games although do require some reflexes (1 more than 2)

If you get nostalgic for pixel graphics Terraria and Stardew valley are both outstanding.

Free games like World of Warships and War thunder can be very entertaining as long as you don't get sucked into the grind or pay to win aspects.

I'm nearly 50 and only play 8-Ball Pool on my tablet. Almost. On rare occasions I'll fire up WinUAE and have a blat on SWIV, Stunt Car Racer or Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge on the Amiga Emulator. Zero interest in modern games.

Early 40s gamer (man and boy) trying few things on steam sale that catches your eye.

Thing like RDR2, witcher series deus ex mankind divided and horizon zero dawn I'm currently enjoying.

Stuff with good stories and lots to do I enjoy, or strategy games like command and conquer or total war is good too as its a slower pace.

Doom 2016 is fun if you want mindless violence smile
