First of all, I know some might not like the use of this term. Maybe there's a better, more subtle word for it out there. But there's a character limit for topic title.
Secondly, I tried asking a question like this on Reddit, and it was deleted because it was deemed inappropriate (even without the word "war" anywhere in the title or text). I don't know what could possibly be inappropriate about it, but I just want to assure that I'm genuinely interested in the situation and not trying to stir up any trouble.

I wonder how Switzerland compares to other European countries (including the UK) when it comes to car ownership, especially something with more than 4 cylinders or older than 15 years.

I just watched Jeremy Clarckson's Motorworld episode about Swittzerland from the mid-90s and was shocked to hear that there was a strong "green" movement against cars -- 30 years ago! It was said that roads were being narrowed to make life for cars users more difficult, highway speed limits were chosen to fight pollution first and foremost, petrol prices were raised to reduce car use and even motorcycles had strict regulations to the point that many people drove bicycles illegally. It all sounds like something from 2020s. I wonder:
1) was that really happening in the 90s?
2) has anything changed since then? If it did, how? I've been to Suisse a bunch of times in the last 6 years and it all looked normal -- in fact, I heard considerably more V8s in NORMAL cars (ie, not supercars) on the streets over there than in London.

3) Are there any pollution or CO2 charges to drive in cities? Or plans for any?

4) how does the future look like for auto-enthusiasts who are into ICE cars?
