Hi all,
I finally got around to replacing the broken spring in my wife’s BMW X1 gear selector today. The broken spring stops the car knowing it’s in park so it warns you to secure the car to stop it rolling away every time it’s stopped or started. Having replaced the spring the car is telling me there’s a drivetrain issue and I can only select gears by using the manual release to allow the gear selector to move out of park. I am hoping this is just because having disconnect the selector unit I now need to clear the code.
Is there anyone around Newmarket, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds with the software to clear the code for me? My simple OBD reader isn’t up to the task. Very happy to pay someone with the right equipment.
Thanks for reading,
Tom

This isn't to state the obvious or be "that guy" - just curious.

Did you disconnect the battery and wait for it to power down before starting the work?

Hi Ben,
Didn’t disconnect the battery as the guide I watched said it wasn’t necessary.

That could be the issue, I'd be starting there first, disconnect and leave for a good while, then reconnect.

Thanks, I will give it a go in the morning. Looks like a more complicated job to get to the battery than it was to remove the centre console and remove and strip the gear selector! Don’t you love working on modern cars, it’s almost like manufacturers make it hard for us…

You don’t normally have to clear codes when you replace the selector, are you sure you haven’t damaged anything else.

Pretty sure I haven’t damaged anything Steve. I took my time and was careful, the only really tricky bit was putting the selector body back together after replacing the spring but I checked it all worked manually before putting it back in the car. I am going to try the battery disconnect this morning and if that doesn’t work I might strip it down again, really hoping the code clears after a disconnect…

All sorted, I missed a multi plug off the back of the selector when I put it back together yesterday. I stripped it all down again today, and saw the plug sitting loose!
