what do i need

Most of my old music is stored on an old 160gb ipod classic.
I use it through a headphone amp and headphones, no requirement for speakers, nor does it really need to be portable.
The ipod is showing its age, crashing from time to time, thought i could just get another, but new ones arent avalible now, and i thought there must be a better option now.
I have all music backed up on a hard drive in flac.
So what do i replace it with, over to you guys.
Dont use it much so dont want to spend a fortune if i dont have to.
I do like the way the ipod works, not really interested in using a computer, is there nice simple solution

Haven't used apple for a while now, however when you connect it to itunes (assume you do) can you back up all your music to a PC??

I'd buy a cheap ipod touch from facebook\ebay say 16gb one and stick a selection on that.

Familiar interface and shouldn't be too expensive.

Either that, or why not stick the music on your phone, is that an apple??

dont have any apple stuff other thanthe ipod, old android phone could be an idea, would rather have it all in one place, shame they dont make them anymore, as it was perfect for my use, i know i could get refurb, but prefere new, think what i was really asking , what would be the modern equivalant? if there is something

What about a WIIM mini feeding a small Fosi DAC/Headphone amp? Would be about £150 all in and should sound good whilst offering a good user experience.

The WIIM mini uses a decent app on your phone and takes the FLACs off your hard drive and passes them to the headphone amp.

I don’t have any direct experience of the Fosi amp but I do have the WIIM mini and it’s great.

thanks for that, i have an amp, its more a user friendly storage solution im after tht i can just plug into my amp.

I’d go with the previous point. Buy an iPod touch and transfer the music over via iTunes on laptop, laptop doesn’t have to be Apple either as iTunes can be downloaded to windows. From there I’d get a Bluetooth adapter so you can stream to the amp wirelessly. You can get them for about £20 online.

Is the HD back up connected to an active PC? If so, simply make the drive shared on your network, then connect your phone to the network and stream everything via your phone to the headphone amp. Either hard wired or get a Bluetooth dongle for the amp if it doesn't have one.

Cost = £0 to £20.

Something like a HiBy R3 might suit you.

It's a portable player and will require an SD card for storage but 256 or 512 cards are relatively cheap these days.

Cheap option that works, store the music on a tablet, ipad or other, leave it plugged in.
If you get an old ipad, you can use the headphone jack.
Otherwise you have choice of bluetooth or USB DAC.

Expensive option, buy a CD player with a USB slot on the front. Marantz do one.

Personally, I like the interface of a PC or a Pi, as there will be one switched on anyway.

A cheap effective box which replicates a car stereo's ability to play from USB stick would be nice perhaps?

sony do mp3 players ranging from £300-7000, can be found here if its out of stock just google the model and see where else you can get it.
that suitable?

alternativelly all i can think of is perhaps some kind of android tablet as well, but i doubt the 3.5mm jack would be that good, you can always work around this with a bluetooth receiver (which'll at least add some mobility to whatever unit you're using).

dont really mind, obviously less is better but dont mind spending if its worth it, most of those brands ive never heard of , but im years out of date with this stuff, what is considered good

None of the brands you will be familiar with are in this market anymore, because everyone just uses their phone. They've all moved up to the premium market with Hi-Res players. You'll be looking at £300+ to get into a basic Sony play that will meet your requirements. Most are like £500-£3000.

So you're left with a multitude of Chinese suppliers to choose from @<£100. Or an Android tablet of similar.

Well its arrived, put a few tracks on it, just to try, it works great, easy to use and sounds great, but thats more down to my headphones and amp, for the price i would recomend for anyone needing a mp3 player, so well chuffed
