Originally I chose the unassisted 4.3 Griff having tested both, however 30 yrs later I am having problems with arthritis / pinched nerves and suspect wont be able to manoeuvre car at parking speeds (narrower 205s) - so wondering if anyone has done this conversion, which looks pleasingly straightforward and inexpensive (various options on ebay)

Seemingly, just replaces steering shaft from column to UJ and is speed sensitive / adjustable to leave unimpeded steering when it lightens up with speed - Had 215 or bigger on front originally, which was a herculean job to manoeuvre at less than walking speed and darted for every field on a mixed camber back road! - No longer find that amusing!

Tyres all unused but have disappointingly all perished, so advice on those too would help

Fitting the electric power steering motor from a Vauxhall Corsa is a popular conversion on many "classics"


Alternatively many Griffith Chimaera and S series owners have fitted a Subaru power steering rack along with a suitable electric pump.

There is a huge long thread here on PH, bit of searching should find it.

I’ve recently had EPS fitted at Lloyds Specialist Developments, not cheap but really happy with it.

certainly far more doable than old hydraulic type + keep full feel of steering - I assume the shaft passes straight through, so no concerns of severed shaft within unit

Really fancy the idea of variable assistance and speed sensitivity smile

The Subaru conversion is a pita to be honest and i did one on a Chim.
Id probably pay someone else to do it if you struggle to get into awkward places, the electrical assisted method sounds like a better option.

Yes it looks about as easy as u could expect - replace column between s wheel and u/j and wire up smile

Really fancy adjustable power assistance with no loss of feeling smile

I don't think it is quite that straight forward! It's not a "one out one back in" job, I think there's cutting, welding and possibly machining involved?

I want to fit a power column to my tuscan racer, so when I was up at SD Autotec recently i had a look at Steve's own Griff500 with a power column fitted. There was a substantial new bracket installed to take the large torque reaction which is now taken by the column of course, plus cutting and welding of the lower end of the column to take the splined end for the tvr UJ. It doesn't look a straightforward job, but was beautifully done as you'd expect from Steve.

Having now watched a few utube videos it has become clear that it requires a proper engineer to adapt things and, as u say, create torque mount.....

EFI Tuscan & look at those exhaust manifolds, love it !!! Is it a small journal 4.5?
