Tapping into others expertise, has a question. My shed has does about 1k miles a year, is it still worth doing an oil change each year given such low mileage increase?

Personally, I wouldn't at that mileage unless it's a valuable car that needs meticulous history. Assuming it's modern synth or semi-synth, that is. Mineral oils degrade faster but there may be other opinions on that. smile

I go 2 years and about 3k miles between oil changes on any of my cars if I don't use them much. I've just bought a motorcycle hat hasn't had the oil changed for 11 years and 3k miles. Starts up fine. wink Mind you, it's been stored indoors all that time.

IMO, pouring oil that's done 1000 miles, down the drain so to speak, is quite frankly, at best - daft. Especially on a shed as you call it.
You'd probably be perfectly ok leaving it till every 3rd year or so. I guess it also depends on exactly how those 1000 miles are made up. Is it a diesel? Does it do lots of short stop/start journeys?

Diesel and does the odd motorway journey, always warmed up when driven.

its heat cycles more than age that degrade oil, i would change it at recommended mileage regardless of age, most important thing is that it gets hot enough in use, oil temp not coolant temp.

I would personally for the sake of £30 but i do see the logic in stretching it out if its a shed you dont really care about

Tend to change on mileage on the daily, more regularly on the specials.

About 30 years ago I had a cheap Montego that burnt & leaked like a sieve. Used to top it up with the stuff I'd drained out of one of the specials......

Thanks for the responses. Think I’ll give it a service every 2 years and see how I get on given how low the mileage is.

No, but change it after 3k miles.

As it is a diesel I would change more frequently than a petrol.

I do mine every 5k regardless, it only ever does journeys over 50 miles and the level is regularly checked.

You should certainly be OK every 2 years IMHO.
