Hi. I’ve read a few posts with useful information, but looking for anything else useful or up to date to add.

My dad is looking at a 2009, Granturismo S MC-Shift, 14k miles.

I’ve said to go in eyes open and bills expected, but what is the reality? What things are the essentials to look out for?

Anything from owners appreciated.

rusty subframes ( 3k for a new one but currently not available) Camshaft variators, late 2009 cars likely immune, engine number higher than 150 something is needed to not be a problem are the main two

There was a recall on the variators (I think - stretching my mind back) and on one or two minor things. But overall very robust cars and more so than the usual reputation of Maserati (I mean, have you seen GT Sand Job?!?).

I've had 3 over time and none of them broke down. The last was starting to have brain farts on the electrics for just the heating controls, but that's about as bad as it ever got in truth! Of course, others may have nightmare stories, but I equally haven't heard many of those. I'd look to see if you've got a local-ish independent to maintain it and it wouldn't be a bad idea to get an inspection pre-purchase. Servicing depends on which service it is, aside of who you use. I say all of this having kicked the tyres on my first one - 4.2 2008 - and it never having any problems!

I'm often tempted back towards them, particularly a later model as a contrast to sticking a 1 on the front of the price for the new model. They are also a car that likes to be reasonably regularly used, and if not then stick it on a trickle charger as they can give up the batteries over a few weeks (and may need a new battery every few years regardless). But enjoy it, be prepared for a couple of K a year on regular servicing and tyres (they're not overly hungry on the tyres) - aside of anything epic going wrong, but as I say, I've not heard of many major problems with them.

Worth heading also to sportmaserati - it's a very good owner forum.

2009 will likely have pre variator problem engine number but doesn’t mean it will be a issue.

Suspension bushes can be a pain but main issue is deciding which gearbox you want. MC is an acquired taste IMHO.
