Morning all,

Mrs C and I are going to Corfu in June. All things being well, we hope she will be pregnant by then. Now, as much as I love a beer, it won't be as much fun having drinks on my own.

Has anyone gone away (that normally drinks) and done a dry one? Was it a revelation?!

Away for 10 days in N. Corfu fyi.

Thanks

Chaz

We went to southern Spain (Malaga, Seville and surrounds) for 10 days in June '21 when my partner was pregnant. It was a brilliant holiday of touring around, beaching, dining out etc. Lots of AF beer and drinks available and it didn't feel weird at all with only me allowed to drink anything.

I went to vegas with the ex-Mrs when she was 6mths pregnant.

Normally we would both have been on Fat Tuesdays and espresso / lemon-drop martinis from 9am but did it totally dry - it was great and we came back with more than we went with which is always a bonus.

Ive done loads of dry holidays (before the above and since) and not noticed the lack of booze at all - I would find it very concerning if I did miss it tbh, thats quite an indictment on lifestyles and the necessity of inclusion to have fun etc.

That was my thought, no booze for a few days should not be a big deal, if it is, then its a problem

For last 5 years I am a non-drinker.
Holidays before that were 'flatter' overall. Nights could morph into each other.

Now I am very 'present' and intentional.

May I suggest an idea for your holiday? Stop and think as much as you can. How am I feeling? What can I see, what can I smell, what is making me happy right now? who is around me, what am I grateful for right now - all sounds a bit woo-woo. Granted.

But on a holiday a couple of weeks ago (a modest one in the mountains of Gran Canaria) I was very serene, blissful even. And I *think* a lot of that had to do with having no alcohol distraction.

If you are off booze in a different place, treat it like an experiment into your 'default' - like treating yourself to a new (possibly better) type of enjoyment.

Sorry if it sound condescending; or earnest. PM me if you'd like to chat

Alcohol free beer is now really good. At home I will often now have an AF beer and it hits the spot just the same. It is coming more and more widely available throughout Greece.

What's stopping you ordering a beer while you're both sitting down for a meal? Or is it a case of if I can't drink alcohol then you can't either?

We've done plenty of holidays to the Middle East, the lack of alcohol/high cost in places where you can get it makes it a better experience overall IMO.

You could do a holiday with activities if drink is a primary source of fun on the usual holidays. Perhaps a cooking holiday, yoga retreat. Appreciate a hiking holiday will not work with a pregnant wife.

Look at airbnb for unique accomodation experiences.

Avoid hotel + pool / all inclusive type holidays imo. Boring and glutinous, being "dry" on one of those type of holidays would be hard going indeed.

I suppose it depends on what you and your missus are normally like when you have drinks together.

I keep my wife away from my work colleagues because she'll make one drink last all night and their idea of fun is for them and their wives to get totally slaughtered.

Not had a drink since last Xmas and been away twice abroad this year so far. Holidays usually revolved around getting tipsy most days.

Was tempted to have a tipple on both trips I went on, mainly with meals, but I decided against it and still had a fab time.

I don’t drink regularly these days, but despite that I’d say it’s totally possible to enjoy time away without drinking, unless you are reliant and have a drink issue of course!

Thanks for the replies all, firstly in case I was misleading - I have no issues with alcohol!! Other than gaseous ones the morning after. I guess i'm over thinking it maybe.!

We always do a lot of sightseeing, walking, getting out and about whether it's the lakes, Dorset or abroad so I guess it might just be nice to get up a bit earlier without the fuzziness sometimes...!!

In all honesty i'll probably not miss it at all, and it'll save money for other things! Mrs C couldn't care less as long as i'm not out getting trollied!

Did an all inclusive trip to Cuba with the wife when she was pregnant. Mostly had very little to drink, but we had a gay English couple next door and I went out for a few evenings with them - good fun!

Am I the only one reading it as if it's a binary choice between either dry or pissed?

No.

Not sure why having a drink should necessarily mean waking up fuzzy or missing out on any appreciation of the other good things about being on holiday.

Indeed. I drink lager, wine, aperol etc because I live the taste. I don't drink to get pissed, id rather not TBH . My other half often doesn't drink and I do. Nothing bad happens, we still have a lovely night out.
