I’m trading in my car to a dealer and buying a new car.
They have helped me put my private plate on retention so my new car will have the private plate, and my outgoing car has a new reg generated but is displaying the private plate for the grace period.
I have informed my insurer of the newly generated reg plate for the outgoing car (cost me £5.50!).
The dealership are going to charge me £200 refundable deposit to give them the new V5 for the outgoing car. They say the current V5 is now defunct because the private plate has been taken off.
I’ve heard of people being fined for not informing the DVLA that they no longer own the vehicle. Do I need to let them know? By sending part of the V5? If so, the old or new one? Or do I do that online?
Also, how to I get a partial refund on the vehicle tax?

DVLA will automatically send a cheque to you when they have been notified by either you or the dealer, you no longer are the registered keeper of the car. You should also receive a letter letting you know you are no longer responsible for the car.Edited by cuprabob on Friday 5th April 18:44

Grace period - you have x amount of days to drive around on a private plate you have put on retention. 3 IIRC.
I've never heard of a grace period before.Q. When must I change the number plates?
A. You must change the number plates using the enclosed V5C as soon as possible
When you put the existing plate on retention online a certificate valid for 3 days ( I guess this is the so called grace period ) is sent by email and you can use this to get new plates for its replacement number.
I never have as whilst I would always do the online transaction myself 3-7 days before pickup of the new car when partex , the dealer has then always sorted the physical side of that.
When the replacement V5 arrives I have also usually sent that electronically to the dealer.
I just make sure that I have the various emails on my phone when I go to pick up the new cars.
