Anyone done this?

My only current option for a domestic flight home is 19:45hrs from T5.
My flight into T3 arrives 18:10.

I would need to clear customs and get our cases then get to T5.

I suspect that's not going to be enough time?

Looking at recent arrivals it seems if you are lucky they might arrive 10 min early but on average its about on time.

Thoughts?

That would be fine for an international transfer with no baggage collection or passport control to navigate and any missed connections down to the airline to sort out, but in these circumstances I would be expecting there was a better than 50/50 chance I would be paying for a hotel and a new flight the next day.

Realistically you won't be out of T3 until 7PM. That gives you maybe 30 mins to get to T5, check-in with bags and get through security!

Thats what I was thinking realistically we are going to be walking into T5 at 7pm, no way we will get through security and to the gate in 5 minutes so it looks like a plan B then....

It took me just under an hour to get from the bus stop outside of T5 to checkin at T3 last week, as both the tube and Elizabeth Line had given up the ghost and I had to get a delayed Heathrow Express.

In hindsight I should have gone back outside to find the bus that goes between terminals (which on paper says 40 minutes journey every 20 minutes).

Yeah not worth the risk as next flight is the next morning.
I think I will just hire a car and drive home.

Are you thinking of booking 2 flights, or is it "one flight" with a change at LHR, ie BA & BA. If the later it's probably doable if you can remain airside, although I would not pack anything mission critical in your hold bagage.

Is it possible to remain airside while transiting from T3 to T5?

Yes on the airside bus, but I have binned the idea now and booked a hire car to drive home in.

The airside bus where you still have to go through security to get into Terminal 5, just a different security!!

We had the same predicament (well actually we didn’t have a choice).
Our Virgin flight from Cape Town landed 10 minutes after the last BA flight to Newcastle so it was stay in a hotel then catch the flight next day or hire a car and drive back which we did.
Worth checking hire car costs regularly as they vary greatly - we originally booked a one way rental (Ford Focus £99) - nearer the time checked again (Kia Sportage or similar £46)

I got out of T5 with baggage within 30 mins yesterday, but I agree 1.5 hours to transfer between terminals is pushing it. Just getting the tube between T3 and 5 will take the better part of half an hour (most of it walking and waiting).
